Little bit of information , thought i lost my phone when at the van to ring towtruck , whilst retracing my footsteps i bump into a man i met once before and I told him about the van and he offered to come have a listen , I didn't want to leave it running for to long but he convinced me too, and about a minute or so the noise stopped , he owned a 1970s Bedford truck so knew his stuff ,as soon as he heard the noise he knew what it was , actually he blooded his hand pulling and fitting the fan Belt onn, he was more aggressive than me at it in a good way , you cant beat an older self thought mechanic , lots more to the story and I will do a proper write up on it when I get some proper sleep , Thanks all , by the way all I must of mentioned start started a least 10 times in my replys thinking it would put u on the right track , ,Well I would never have guessed that even if I had read the book lol.
Thanks soupdragon I really appreciate the help suggestions and just knowing that there are people out there who want to helpEvery cloud……… Nice that it was something simple in the end.
Thanks paul , anytime I break down I try and fix it were it is if possible , I will remember the bottom arm if it ever happens again , I would prefare the van to be lift by just the front wheels if possible , I have most spare parts in the van just in case , The noise from the sticking spring on starter sounded like a shopping trolley stuck underneath the van , anyway hopefully sorted for now ,I've been towed on to recovery trucks once or twice in mine.. ( probably over 10 times now.) The recovery guys always wrapped a strop around the bottom arms and towed using that
Thanks for ur kind words, , I am delighted it was nothing more serious , if u read my other post over the last couple of months I have aged and if it had of been anything more serious I think it would of been it for me , after my previous problems scares , I had only got the courage stupidity to get back into the van , drive around now with all windows and doors open , , the mechanical help is really appreciated but so is comments like ur own and many other s who dont have the mechanical knowledge, , Once again thanks you , I will definitely check out getting a towing eye put on, byetheway is that ur van parked in the middle of the jags ? Hopefully I can get mine to somewhere close to looking like it ,,, what a beutiful vanSorry I didn't offer any advice (I didn't have any!)... But / and absolutely delighted that it was an easy fix for such a beautiful van...
... I had a forward towing bracket put on by @TimCommer... He might be worth a shout...
So delighted you got things sorted...
sorry I meant to say starter in my original comment not dynamo , one other thing the issuse happened whilst I was driven already started which seems a bit odd , starter is behind my left leg so maybe it turned the starter on whilst changing gear , just a bit odd that it happened whilst I was driven it and not from originally starting it . One other thing on my van vin plate or whatever u call that thing with all the numbers it says it's a commer sv , I have heard of pb ect but not commer sv , any idea ,I think what he was explaining was the starter motor bendix jamming into the starter ring because the return spring is weak. It could also be worn teeth on the starter ring or bendix causing the starter to stay engaged. If it happens again give the starter motor a few good taps with a blunt instrument (hammer) or put the third in gear and rock the van back and forward, this usually Thanks panky , have u ever had a starter that done that , I am just wondering have u heard the noise ?
Putting new fan belt on do I just have to undo the 1 adjusting bolt to remove and replace the belt ? That's how I got it offPretty sure that SV or VS is the designation for a van with sliding doors.
Ah yes the early vans has the pull starter near the choke control on the inner wing, maybe that's what happened and you inadvertently operated the starter.
