valve stem seals

Hey folks looks like I found why poppy ain't running right ! Sent her to the garage to get tuned up, and they found that two cylinders were oiling up after a while ! Looks like it's the valve seals, it was standing for three years and I guess they went hardanyway the question is, anyone got any t tps on changing these without taking the head off! One tip ive heard is to put some chord down the cylinders to stop the valves dropping down the bore so u can change them? Any thoughts on this and has anyone done it on here thanks and all the best, Al
 
The standard engine doesn't have stem seals just 'O' rings that slip over the valve stem (pretty useless) but I believe Fort pinto ones will go on. Unfortunately if the plugs are oiling up it could be something a bit more serious as oil past the valve stems normally just gives a puff of smoke on start up:I
Is it definitely oiling up - if it's coking up then it could be the carb running very rich.

It is possible to do it with the head on, pushing a cord into the plug hole and compressing it against the valves with the piston. Never done it, but supposed to work.
Valve guides could also be worn, alon with the rings, like Panky said. Try a compression test.

Compressed air works too.
Dont forget a cylinder leakage test as well as a compression test.

I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.
 
Just got it backfrom the garage and it running sweet, it's never pulled so well! He did set it up but it's not quite there yet can see it oiling up again gonna try the rope trick! But set off for a drive tonight and the brakes completely failed! Looks like three years standing took its tole! Good news! Only found two new tyres for twenty quid and a head set with new stem seals included for fifteen! Ps I'll be up soon. To square u up and get more bits! How much for all four slave cylinders?
 
Be interesting to see how you go with this one, my valve seals need replacing and she only puffs a bit of smoke on start up.. Although this may be common with these motors.
Accidentally overfilling the sump even by about 1/2L seems to make it dramatically worse, big cloud of smoke on start up. Other than that still runs like a clock, no plugs fouling up.
