Valve Rocker Adjustment

This is related to my "engine problems" thread, but I thought it was worth putting it in a seperate topic, so other people will be able to find it more easily.

I am planning to check the valve rocker clearances on Frodo, but in the manual it states "To be carried out when the engine is very hot"

I currently have all the cooling system off the engine, so "very hot" would be shortly followed by "very broken"!

The clearances in the manual state 0.3mm for inlet and 0.35 for exhaust. If I was to check them to get them roughly right when the engine is cold, how much do you think I should increase that by?

If this helps sort the problem, then obviously I will recheck them once the engine is back together and can be run properly.

Valve clearences mostly affect performance and economey so unless they are totally out i wouldnt bother until its back together. In thoery if you havent skimmed the head or altered the setup (head gasket)the gaps should be approx as they were before. If you do have to set them i find just setting them 'sloppy' on the gauge will be a good starting point. Hope this helps

For now just check they have some clearance and are all about the same and leave it at that

I'm going to have a go tomorrow, and just check the clearances are about 0.2 - 0.4, after that, the head comes off.....
