Valve guides

I need to replace the valve guides on an alloy head. Has anyone tried to fit more modern valve stem seals to the standard rootes guides? Did it work, what ones did you use?

Was just going to order standard guides from speedies, but are there other guides out there with better seals?

I have heard of Pinto seals being used but you might need to machine a groove in the top of the guide for them to click into. When I did Harvey's head a couple of years ago I replaced the guides but just used the normal 'O' rings seals, I've not had any trouble with oil passing past the stems but if I did it now I might think about cap seals - being more adventurous and all;)
One thing I would advise is to only fit the cap seals to the inlet valves, these engines were not designed to run on unleaded and the extra bit of lube on the exhaust valves would help.
 
Thanks for that panky, will hopefully get the head off tomorrow and see how bad they are. Have a spare set of standard seals and have just spent a massive £1.75 on a set of pinto ones.
 
been meaning to add that the pinto seals don't fit. The inner diameter is the right size for the valve stem but they are too narrow to fit over the valve guide. You'd have to remove the guides and turn them down a bit on a lathe.

I just replaced the o-rings in the 'valve retaining cap? thing', they were rock hard and not doing much. I also changed the exhaust valves as the ones in there were looking a little pitted - but they have done something like 20,000 miles of motorway driving on the cheapest unleaded i could find, so only to be expected...

All running okay now. I must change the valve guides next time the head is off as these were showing some wear.

It's got phosphor bronze lined ones - what advantage are these? anyone know where i can get another set?

Not sure if they have any advantage. The fozzy bronze expands more when hot so you need a greater clearance or they will get tight when running so I would expect a puff of smoke on start up as oil will seep down the valve stem. I would use the standard cast iron ones but get them machined to take the Pinto seals, maybe a little groove for them to locate into. Saying that I fitted new guides into Harvey's ally head a couple of years ago and used the 'O' rings - no sign of smoke at any time:)
