value

Just got back after seeing a split window VW van at a classic car place with the sticker price of a not unusual $50000 Australian dollars. It made me think about why I have put $25000 into my Commer ,when if I wanted to sell it ,I would be lucky to get $5000. When I joined Qantas in 1964 ,we had what was known as the 10 pound POM , fOR 10 pound a british person could immigrate here with their family. They sometimes brought their cars.In our car park at work were a few campers including a couple of Commers. I thought at the time it would be cool to drive one around Australia .In 2004 and heading for retirement it was time to act.I spent a couple of years looking for an english commer camper,I found a run down one and paid $100. I have made the rust panels, painted it ,built a stroker motor, widened the frount track ,fitted disc brakes, 5 speed gear box,did this work myself. but paid someone to recreate the back but fitted dual batteries ,flat screen TV ,metho stove ,and 12 v fridge, and before I knew it 25000$ had slipped through my fingers.ON each of the 3 years since retirement I have been on a roughfully 8000 mile trip ,with only one blown headgasket ,but I guess the real reason for the Commer is I am a Rootes tragic, My everday car for 30 years has been a 1960 Rapier ,I historic rally a Tiger and I have a 1959 Alpine race car,and as we in the lower half of Australia head into the colder months ,it is time for the Commer to earn its keep and take me to someplace warmer.

Keep on trucking!
And it's because we are wiser....
The VW bubble will burst, I am sure

and having seen the van in the flesh (a truly roving reporter and a VERY lucky birthday chance encounter!) it is worth every penny/cent thomo - when we fear a 3 hour journey I often think of you!

I think all you need to do is hit the road and find those big skies again - you'll soon realise that $25K is a small price to pay for the joy it brings[8D]
They say money can't buy happines but I reckon you've dispelled that myth[^]

At that stage petrol up north was 1.80 $ a litre and the old girl does 23 m p g ,so every 23 miles its about 10 bucks ,so a lot goes on fuel .So you only go into camp sites about once a week for a shower and top up the battery's ,they are about $ 30 a night. Also the price of metho for my stove goes through the roof and is bright blue ,and is locked away in the shops, some of the locals like to drink it.I did send a c d of my last trip to someone in the forum ?,as I still have not concered the phot loading thing
