Using a commer to tow another vehicle?

My van has got a tow bar which I presume would have been used to tow a small trailer. Has anyone tried towing anything heavier? I wouldn't mind using the commer to pull my renault 5 on an A frame I use my transit presently which is 2.3ltr 16 valve and that copes no problem. The renault is pretty light as the interior has been stripped out I reckon it weighs about 600kg? Would the commer cope or would it be 30MPH the whole way and then never getting up a hill?

I reckon you would pull it....slowly! ...but remember you need to be able to stop! ....I bet Aussie Commers trailer weighed more than that and it got him round Oz and back ;)

Depends how well your van is running I surpose but mine was ok with this on! Wouldnt want to tow anything any bigger for a long distance, but saying that once your moving from a standing start you wouldnt know it was on the back until you come to stop lol

Pity the Renault is front wheel drive you could have fired it up to help you on the hills;)

I towed another Commer with Peggy a few years ago - wouldn't want to do it again though!

I think you will be OK[8)], but it will depend on hills, with that load even the slightest hill will make her work very hard. Impatient traffic will be your real problem, especially on hills. You will be going very slow. If you decide to do it, use low gear, high RPM and let her work at her own pace/speed without over revving. If the engine is healthy they don't seem to mind being overloaded and a couple of times when we were towing we stalled out on hills and had to unhook and turn around. I was really worried about big end bearings but we often climbed long gradient hills at full power doing only 5-10mph very low RPM didn't seem to bother it. Just used a lot more petrol.[:0]

Ooh and use high octane fuel 98, makes a massive difference especially with pinging under load.;)

Good luck with it, slowly slowly and don't let traffic bully you,
Paul

Stopping will also be a problem and we fitted brakes to our trailer.
**********The emotional roller coaster of towing with your Commer******

Step 1, Overwhelming anxiety!, will it make it to the top of the hill. (screaming "come on Commer" does help a little).

Step 2, Total relief!, thank god we made it to the top. Quickly replaced with step 3.

Step 3, Sheer terror!, will it stop as you descend the hill before the brakes burn out or your leg muscles cramp up. "screaming stop ya bas#$!d does help" a little.

Step 4, Goto step 1!!
:D

Thanks for that Aussie commer that's very interesting and much respect to you and your family's epic journey, amazing. I've explained to my wife on numerous occasions that now we have our van if we do lose everything we can allways just hit the road Aussie commer style, needless to say she's not that impressed with the idea. How much did your trailer weigh roughly at its heaviest?

I towed my little teardrop trailer nearly 800 miles to Devon and back.... Managed 50 flat out down hill. Up hill... we were pulling over to let tractors passed. The trailer weighs 350kg loaded.

I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.

Hey I might just give it a go. It's only rarely when I might take the renault to classic racing events and I might have to stay in a hotel it'd be cool just to pitch up near the track thus saving a bit of dough.

I tow a sixteen foot boat with mine often. No problem, just a bit more shove needed on the brakes down hill but i do have a servo fitted.

I just need a good rootes...
