update petrol engine to unleaded or go diesel?

Hi all
Its all in the subject line really.. Getting my dodge restored and on the road finally and my initial intention was to change engine to firstly gas conversion(decided against due to lack of availability of refuelling) and then diesel (saw here that rover V8 seems a preferred one), however my mechanic is suggesting fixing original engine up and converting to unleadeded.. and is making sense if there isint much difference price wise for fuelling these days.. can anyone advise what the advantages of diesel are these days and are there differences in taxing with regards to ommissions etc.

Obviously you will get more MPG with a diesel but you would need to do an awful lot of mileage to get your initial investment for the conversion back. I would recommend keeping the original engine and have an SU carburettor conversion done - better performance and improved fuel consumption guaranteed I'm sure Tim (commerracer) will send you a pair of modified manifolds for your mechanic to fit

Diesel would be very slow, and unless you use it regularly it can have fuel problems with modern bio-diesel.
V8 is a bit of a mission and quite costly because of all the work involved.
The original lump with some tweaks is adequate for general use

Thanks guys, think am fairly sure Im going the petrol conversion route.. actually tim, if you do the manifolds I was wondering do you do the gaskets and carberattor too.. I tried emailing you but think as the email on this for me is an old one its no longer working.
