Unique Commer Bits..

I went to the farm to start picking up commer bits...

Can anyone tell me what are the unique bits for commers that are not the same as hillman bits which can be soruced easily.

So far i think..

- Gearbox and linkages
- Steering colums and boxes
- lights n gauges.
- The engine mounting bracket (inside the timing cover)

What about the front ends ? and Diffs ? I only want to collect the unique commer bits before the ground is bulldozered !!

HI PHANTOM IF I WAS IN YOUR BOOTS I WOULD BE TAKING AS MUCH STUFF AS I COULD, ESPECIALLY THE DOORS ECT, AS ONCE THESE HAVE GONE THEY WILL BE GONE FOR GOOD, AND VERY HARD TO COME BY. I WOULD ALSO CUT OFF OF THE VANS AS MANY BITS OF SAVABLE BODY WORK EG PEAK SECTIONS ,REAR CORNERS ,YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN DONT YOU, AS MUCH AS POSS. PLUS YOU NEVER KNOW I MIGHT BE IN TOUCH SOON AND BUY A LOAD OF STUFF FROM YOU.;):D:p

If it were me, I would take everything, but then I've got somewhere to put it :)

YES INFACT I WOULD DO THE SAME AS MART, ABSOLUTLY EVERY SINGLE VAN AND BITS. EVEN IF I DIDNT HAVE ANYWHERE TO PUT IT. HAHA.(SAVE THE VANS, I WONDER HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST TO SHIP THEM OVER TO ENGLAND. MAYBE ME AND MART COULD HIRE A CONTAINER BETWEEN US AND SHIP A FEW OVER TO BLIGHTY.FOR SAFE KEEPING AND FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.;):D:p

that van looks like its flapping to take off!

You'll be suprised what you find people need; Ray managed to get me to save the bumper mounts that go to the chasis. Door hinges and various knows and buttons; its the small things that people miss!

Relax, i am keeping all the bodies...The white one is going to be moved to safety. I just cant cut up a windowed bus...my fav.

As you can see the insides of these vans are scattered around, what mechanical bits are unique to commers ???

IF YOU SAVE ALL OF THE VANS AND FIND OTHERERS AS WELL YOU COULD SET UP YOUR OWN COMMER SPARES FRANCHISE IN YOUR COUNTRY, OR EVEN AN EXPORTER OF RUST FREE VANS, (WELL NEARLY RUST FREE).:D

Engine and gearbox's aren't unique but the bits that make them fit are - e.g. the front plate has the engine mounting positions on it and the sumps are definitely a Commer one-off (it's shaped to fit over the cross member) as is the rocker box cover. The Rootes parts bin was raided good and proper for suspension and axles but the cars they came from are even rarer (Alpine, Humber) - so nab everything you can. Thing like door handles go for a small fortune and front grille trim is virtually unobtainable - that's a treasure trove you've got there don't let it be buried for future generations to find.

Hi PhantomRose,

How about this to start you off in your new business venture ;)

In the UK's damper climate the heater 'airboxes' often rot away completely - ours certainly has :( These are 'airboxes' are the bit between the heater unit and behind the front top front grill - they also have a drain tube coming out of their base. If you can get a decent one of these I'd be seriously interested, even with shipping from Oz [:0]

Also the top grill itself in chrome, if that works out (Martin, ours is so rusty you simply wouldn't want it in exchange for one of your nice rechromes)

Both rust free(ish) quarterlights too - hmmm not sure how much all this will be adding up for shipping costs but very seriously interested subject to that.

What do you think ;)

Lol was just wondering too how much it would cost to ship a commer grill over :D

Everyone is drooling over all those buried treasures!!!

Woolfy and Martin, how can you resist ;)

Cazz... student commerade!!!!

DAM !! I picked up the sumps but left them back...

Australian Franchise .... so far there are only 3 cusomers here and i am one lol...

I will try to go back on the weekend and get any grills, all the sumps, the front engine mount plates, rocker covers. Its about 3 hours each way. With trailer hire and petrol is a little over $A200, so i need to make the trips worthwhile.

I will have a look at the heater box. Does it un-blot ?

Anyway back to work... I am happy to offer bits i dont need to anyone for free, time is the biggest problem for me.... this is my hobby :)

I would love to make an electric commer, after my brown beast is running again that is.... its sucking me dry for funds...dam germans, over complicate things. But put your foot down in one and its addictive.. 5K for suspension, then later this year another 5 for the heads / timing chain, then the electric commer starts...

and yes i need the 6.9L engine for towing the commer back once the batteries go flat ! There is always a plan.

Heater boxes held in by self tapping screws behind the grilles and bolts under the dash ;)

And bottom pulleys, radiators, water pumps and thermostat housings - oh and just check if there are any overdrive gearboxes and props to be had:p

Commeracer,

I had though of that, actually have a spare 6.9 for just such a project..... Cooling any decent engine will always be a problem with the commers. Unless you put air scoops along the sides and run dual radiators.

I put the 6.9 it in the back of one of the vans for storage, was amusing to see it drop the van way way down !!! did look cool being so low !!

fit it in properly and lower it at the same time :D how cool is that [8D]
go for it :p:p:p
