Anyone used hammerite direct to rust could underframe protection be that easy[?]

no it cant 
, hammerite is excellent stuff but is brittle and will not take the grit blasting that underframes get, it lasts about a year at most. i use waxoyl underbody seal,its hard to beat and well worth the cost [^]

I heard waxoyl can be a pain to apply how much prep does it need[?]

I have used both in the past and agree with Tim. The Hammerite was ok for a while, but was liable to chip and then blister when rust set in. Hammerite can be messy to apply, but works a treat. All the preparation you need is to clean the suface to be protected and cover up your brakes.
I have also heard good reports of Dinitrol, but have never used it.

the better you prep the surface the better waxoyl works, same as everthing else. so long as the surface is clean and all the rust treated first then its like painting with tar/bitumen.

I meant to say that Waxoyl can be messy to apply, but I used a hand pump spray thingy and warmed up the Waxoyl. Brushing it on sounds much cleaner.

You could also sandblast/wire brush, prime, shutz, 3 coats of paint and then waxoil :I
