Tyres

Can anyone advise me on the lowest profile tyres I can safely put on my 15inch wheels, I have cross ply ones on at the moment which dont give me the greatest confidence. Thought I might do this first then look at how much to lower her, thanks

Another excerpt from Desi's posting. I think an answer to your other question about dropping the rear is here as well:-

the front is cut springs (ive taken pics to do a cuttting springs how to later as theres been a few people asking), trimmed bumpstops, low profile tyres (195/50), and itll be getting firmer shocks as mentioned.
rear has been converted from spring over axle to spring under axle, which has dropped it about 5.5-6". I fabbed all the new saddles and shackle plates myself from 1/4" plate, and used landrover U-bolts. the rear shocks on these are lever arm with droplink, mounted on a bracket that sticks down 5", so all ive go to do is remove the bracket and bolt them to the chassis X-member instead, and theyll work like stock.

Thanks Panky but I think he had problems with (195/50) and the gear ratios. I am finding this all very confusing some people say you can lower it by 2" by just putting lower profile tyres on, others say it has problems. Are (195/65) standard tyres? Cheers.

Can't say for sure, mine have just got 195 x 14 on them (dirty big black doughnuts). Hopefully someone else will enlighten us.

Mine came with 195x15's...so maybe 195 is a standard fitment.
I did run 205/50/15's for a while on the front with no problems.
When i sold my highwayman it was fitted with 225/75/15's.

So I think it works like this

195/65/15s

195mm tyre width
65 profile height (65% of tyre width)
15 wheel size

??

Would like to go down in profile height, rather find out what is possible before getting it wrong..

ps thank you everone great forum, hopefully make it to the next meet does anyone know of anymore commers down in the Brighton area??

There should be a good population of Rootes products in the area, after all it is the home of Speedies [^]

I know they are brilliant...they have already supplied me with bits for my overdrive....although it did take me 10min to drive there from home!!

hi ya before i fitted the alloys 2 mine . i had fitted 205 40 15s with no troubles at all it took out most of if not all of the wallow but did bugger up the speedo ratio [:(!]

Hello all,
I have just saved the money for new lower profile tyres, after all the help through here I decided to get 195/55 for 15inch wheels, but have been told that that van tyres dont come in that low a profile, can only get as low as 195/65 for a van/camper as they need to take the extra weight? Although I have seen from other postings that people have had lower profile tyres on their vans, Anyone had any problems with these? Safety?
Also apart from Dozers Rover Alloys does anyone know of any other alloys that will fit the commers stud pattern?
Cheers
Looking forward to the next meet up might it be in Wales?

the thing to look at is the load index on the tyre sidewall, the higher the better, 92 or above is ok i think, but do check :)
