Tyres and Nipples

Hi all.

We've needed some new tyres on Pootle for a while and have finally saved up some cash. I've had a look on the search function here at 'tyres' and theres so much information I'm lost as to what I need! We currently have 6.70-15C tyres. We don't need anything fancy, just something that will do the job. Bearing in mind that Pootle is a heavy old girl, can anyone suggest anything suitable?

On the subject of nipples.... Since my mate who was the mechanic who looked after Pootle, sadly passed away last year I have learnt how to change the oil and filter, flushed the radiator, and a few other minor jobs. But I am lost as to how to grease the old girls nipples. Does anyone know of a classic friendly garage (we're in St Ives in Cambridgeshire) that won't rip us off? One that I could pay to do the nipples once, but that might let me watch so I'd know how to do it next time would be ideal, and that would have a general look over her for me. Being a complete mechanical numpty, I've been ripped off in the past and it has made me wary of garages.

Hope you are all good, and that your vans are giving you trouble free motoring!

Matt, if you can get over to us (pe38) i will show you how to do the nipples. I may even have a spare grease gun you can have :)
Tyres, if you want to stay with the old cross plys then search for the same as what you have. If you want to move onto radials then search for a van tyre 175R 15 or 185R15 ;)

nipples are not to be feared! If you invest in some nipple covers once Tim has helped you identify them all you can add the covers so that they are easy to find next time on your own!

Hi Tim.

I will definitely take you up on that offer! For some reason I thought you guys were in Norfolk but Claire remembered where you were.

I'll be getting the tyres done soon but I've put my back out at the moment and can hardly get off the sofa, nevermind crawling around under the van looking for nipples. If it's ok with you I'll drop you an email in a few weeks about coming over and sort out a day that's good for you. Will be good to see you again.

Admin, where would I find nipple covers? You can imagine what came up when I googled it:)

Don't get the covers with tassles though, the grease clogs 'em up something rotten!

I am not a person, I am a number, 395 actually......Be seeing you!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Don't worry Admin, I just googled "car nipple covers" and found some. Not nearly as interesting as the ones I found first though.

Are they all a standard size, and how many needed on a commer?

No, it has a male thread and takes a pub gas size regulator.

Just had a quote for van tyres at about £60 each. The brand was 'Hankook' which I'd never heard of.

Does anyone know if these are reasonable for the price?

They are a well known brand but never tried them myself. I paid a similar price for Harvey's tyres but can't remember the brand name.

Hankook are 1 of the brand name tyres mate. sounds about right price wise but you may be better off going for Avon brand tyres. bit cheaper and very good tyres. i used them on my fitting van and they are a nice ride and very hard wearing :) are you on 14's or 15's?

We're on 15's. Will have to have a ring round to see if I can find avons. Only called a few places but not many had much selection.

Thanks for the help gentlemen.
