Tyre recommendations

Is there a preferred size/make of tyre for Commers? Mine currently has 6.7-15 tyres which are (1) very old with cracked sidewalls and (2) crossplies, making them illegal and (IMHO) undesirable respectively. As crossplies are as far as I know 100% aspect ratio, the radial equivalent would be a 170/100R15, clearly non-existent. I calculate the closest radial size is either 185/90 (hard to find) or 205/80 (probably too big for the rim).
What is everyone else using? Are there suitable radials? Are crossplies available? Any help gratefully received!!!

if no one replies pop along to your local stapletons or kwik fit I think you should be looking for Commer'cial tyres stronger sidewall,..
Don't go for the cheapest cheap ones "false ecconomy" they should have some thing for all budgets

Peggy has a nearly new set of tyres on her, I can't remember the exact size but 185 or 195 - 70 - 15 rings a bell, and yes, they are commercial/van tyres.

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?
Peggy's got an MOT !!! (not a lie)

I use 185/70C, slightly smaller dia than the crossplies but much better ride :)

Are commercial tyres really necessary? I ask this as i have 4 decent tyres from a seat toledo i am breaking atm, and they would fit perfectly onto my commer (my current tyres are horrific). If they arent suitable, could somebody explain why just out of interest?

i may be rather naive (actually, im very naive haha), but surely there cant be that much weight different in the commer vs saloon car? and also the lack of any power going into the commer wheels would mean car tyres would be able to handle the torque?

Mot wise, would i have to have commercial tyres fitted or not?

Van tyres are made stronger as they have to cope with more weight. The thing to look at is the load index on the sidewall, the higher the better :)

MoT wise you will probably be fine.
But if you were ever stopped & inspected by the Police I believe you are breaking Construction & Use Regulations.
Also I think your insurers wouldnt be impressed if you ever had to make a claim and they decided to inspect your vehicle.

I'm surprised that a modern radial wouldn't be up to the job on a Commer, after all a Commer weigh about the same as a modern VW Golf (1500kg give or take). Are there other factors to consider apart from weight??

The kinda things that I'd also keep in a lardy hatchback anyhow!

As well as weight its sidewall strenth and number of ply.
I suppose you could fit 50 or 60 profile on the Commer and therefore use car tyres but it wouldnt be "nice"
Conversely I think a 75 or 80 profile on a modern golf would not be good, and lead to blowouts.

with car tyres, the lower the profile the stiffer the sidewall and higher the speed rating and load index. The j4 runs on 45 profile Z rated with a 98 load index and is a major improvement over the originals :)

I have used the below site to source tyres for a classic motorbike. Speedy delivery, plenty of choice and good prices. Not sure if suitable for Commers, but I made a search using the above tyre numbers: 185/70-15.
