Just wondered if anybody has towed a Commer with an A frame. When i have used mine on modern cars it fixes to the front suspension arms but as they are set quite far back it looks like the best option is to go off the front bumper.

Yeah that sounds good for a solid bar but trouble is i need 2 good anchor points for the A frame. Maybe i will have to make something up.
Yes something like that. will have a lay underneath with a tape measure and draw something up, think i will wait for snow to clear first though.
You would have to use quite a heavy towing vehicle. Also when towing with an a frame it is like having an unbraked trailer and can be quite dangerous when braking in the wet due to the vehicle behind wanting to push the toving vehicle and you end up with a jack knife.
I woulD recomend putting the Commer on a four wheeled braked trailer (will also keep VOSA your back as they have the powers to sieze dangerous towing combenations and crush them and fine the driver)

i have towed my van with one it dont fit on that well i wouldent advise useing one on a commer
I have not read the above links yet but I have heard A frames are a very grey area in law :I only supposed to be used in emergency's ?

We recently towed a bamtam mobile shop 100 mileswith an A frame, fantastic idea until we nearly lost it on the 1st bend ha ha came home in 4WD at 40mph on A1, was a crazy thing to do but was fun and we didnt get arrested. I wouldnt do it again with something so heavy but a great peice of kit. Ian

Crikey this takes me back. When I was a wee lad back in the '80s (OK '60s) Mr Bishop's mobile shop would come around twice a week, I always thought of it as a converted coach and thinking about it in latter years I was convinced it was a Duple bodied Bedford - but looking at these pics makes me wonder. It looks so familiar with the step light and the shelves opposite, I was barely big enough to see over the counter - I wonder if Mr Bishop is still around with his Brylcreemed hair and brown grocers coat selling 1d (penny) Arrow Bars:I

The law is very clear on this, anything being towed over 750kg has to have a braking system or its illegal! a towing dolly with a braking system where the front wheels of the towed vehicle are lifted is your best bet but very expensive. the police are really starting to come down hard on bad towing practices at the mo. Honeyfield trailer centre (Bristol 01179 637231/Gloucester 01452 423871) can help with advice or trailers and dollys.

Thanks for the very useful info. Decided in the end the best option would be to use a transport firm which we did yesterday. Yori is now with us tucked up in her new garage thawing out ready for restoration. Will put some pics on soon as i get started.
