To scrap or not to scrap?

I'm probably going to start something with this one, but I need a 2nd, 3rd, 4th.... etc opinion on my recent purchase (see vehicles for sale).

I have just taken delivery of a rather sick Dodge Spacevan camper. I bought it soley with the intention of taking off what I can use and scrapping the rest (the main thing being it has a factory fitted o/d:)). However, seeing its looking so sad on the drive has made me think it deserves more.

However, giving it a good poke with a screwdriver shows more rot than metal - the front is rotten down both sides - so much so it has almost parted company on the drivers side, the peak is all filler, the gutters and roof on both sides is rotten, the rear roof section is full of holes, both doors have gone... I'm sure there is more. Trouble is looking at some of the ones Woolfy and Martin Maltas have repaired on here has given me ideas.

So here it is, the big question, is it too far gone (I think I know the answer)?

I have taken loads of pics, so rather than stick them all up here is the link to the album:

BTW if it is a deciding factor the big ends have done which is why it was layed up. Also, I have a fantastic '67 PA I bought off of Martin Watts last year so dont need it and think she would benefit more from my attention.

Thanks

Mike

It does look a sorry state[V] But I think you should think again before sending it to the crusher. Harvest the bits you need and offer it to some one else, they can either re-built it (we've seen worse brought back to life) or more bits can be pillaged, there must be some panels worth saving - and then they can offer it to some one else etc. etc. etc.

That was kind of what I was thinking. It would be a shame to scrap her, I just wasnt sure if someone was likely to want it with everything of value gone.

just had to put my hands over dogs ears.............. scrap indeed tut tut lose your money, time & sanity like the rest of us!

The Dog is on its way....

Looks to be a restorable van, but you could break it to salvage all the useable parts for people :)

You could bring it to Commerfest and everybody could help strip it, then leave the rest here[:0]

Is that you volunteering to take on the work Martin;-) I think it would be a bit far to push though.

and I think I have lost my sanity already which is why I now have this parked on my drive!

Seriously though, I don't want to scrap it if there is hope

There is always hope, just depends how brave you are ;)

tell you what, you take off the bits you were on about and give me a call as i will make you an offer on the remainder of the van, and then sit back and watch the magic begin with restoring her.
;):p i will bring her back to life.

oh well i love a challenge, and wouldnt want to see another one go to the crusher just because of a little rust here and there.(what am i saying) we all know theres gonna be a load of rust, but we love it dont we.haha;):p:D

I did think of making it into a trailer so I can tow my bike, but I think I might get strung up looking at some of the responses to scrapping;) somthing like this:

Would be cool though.

So I guess its decided - it will not get scapped, I will take off it what I want and offer it out. Woolfy gets first refusal. It will be a few weeks before I am ready as I want to get the summer of camping out of the way before I fit the o/d to the Commer. Thats unless I get attached to it, find some money and decide to restore it myself.
