To heat or not to heat - This is my question!!

Am i being really silly and missing something vital or are Commer heaters rubbish?

The 2 hoses to the blower are really hot so i know that heat is getting to it, however no heat at all is being put out? I have squeezed the bulbous end but it's perished at the bottom.

The flaps are open.

Any advice would be wonderful.

The matrix is probably blocked. You may have to flush it out with a hosepipe. The bulb only drains water let in by the vent under the windscreen. If the end is perished, you only loose a bit of airflow thru the heater ;)
 
Take the 2 pipes off the heater box, attatch a hosepipe to one end, put a short hose on the other, just leading out of the van. Turn the hose on and stand back :I
If its completely blocked, now't 'll come out [V] If your lucky a steady stream of brown water followd by clean :)
Are the pipes right up to the heater hot[?] The other thing is the heater valve, behind the front grille could be blocked or seized [xx(]
 
Try and get a reverse flow through the matrix, that way you'll disturb the sludge better.

Yeah Martin the pipes right up the the heater are boiling hot. Too hot to touch even:).
What does that pull rod thingy do in the cab??? Does that open the valve?

I've got a brand new Commer heater kit, including new hoses, matrix, fan and loads of other stuff need to fit. Let me know if you're interested in buying it.

I'll dig it out and see what's involved. There's probably a few parts you've got in stock I may need so it might be sensible to do some bartering?

Gents, I don't want to start a friendly squabble :D!!

I'm a bit embarrassed. :I Martin very kindly sorted me out with some brake stuff just before my recent trip to Le mans, so I very much feel obliged to give him first dibs on the heater! On the other hand, if you are desperate for the parts, and Martin has no objections, then as far as I'm concerned you can have them.

Please discuss amongst yourselves and let me know. :)
 
First come, first served :D If Don hasn't got his sorted, I can supply him a good second hand one, But I would like to put the new one on the Detector van :)

Sounds fair enough guys, well done. The detector van seems a fitting home.

I'll try and dig it out over the weekend Martin. It's a pretty bulky kit in a large box. I think it'll cost a bit to post too, but I'll be up north at some point in August so could drop it off if you don't need it too urgently? I'll try and find out costs, and also what I paid for it a few years ago. I was going to replace the heater in mine but as I don't really use it in winter I haven't be bothered about the lack of warm air.

Martin, it'll probably be around August 20th as I have to go to Durham that weekend. Probably not in the Commer, sadly.

PS Don - Am I alone when reading the original post again, with it's talk of hot blowers, perishing bottoms, open flaps and even squeezing the bulbous end, in thinking this was written with a tongue firmly in a cheek???
