Tips for change to Alternator from Dynamo

Hi,

I’ve got a Lucas C40 Dynamo fitted and want to install an Alternator.
I’m not fussed about original appearing alternators so don’t have to fork out for those dynamator alternators.

Can anyone recommend an alternator that works and fits the bracket or any kits available to do the conversion?

I’ve found some Lucas type ARC alternators on eBay but not sure they’ll fit.

No probs. Give me a couple of hours. Not very good at mechanics but sure someone will add to this.
 
It should be easy enough once you've got the bits together and a diagram, but I don't think that bracket is suitable as it's off an Arrows Series engine. I could be wrong but best to go for the basic bent bit of steel that is fitted to the Commer;)

Here's the diagram I used for the Minor, should be similar to a Commer but check the original diagram for connections.

Another thing to consider is are you positive earth at the moment? if so you will need to be careful if you have any accessories or extra gauges fitted.

You can use 15ACR 16ACR or 17ACR alternators. They are all a similar basic fitting. I think I have a 16ACR on mine.
You can use a piece of 8mm [edit]or 5/16UNF [/edit] threaded bar with the existing bracket if you don't have the correct bracket. I've done that several times in the past. Use washers to line up the fan belt correctly, and six nuts and washers on the threaded rod. The existing tensioning strap can usually be used with the alternator, or modified to fit.
Panky's diagram shows a new thick wire to the alternator, but you can use the existing wiring with an alternator plug on the end.
I've attached a PDF of the official Lucas conversion guide, which I've had since 1972, and which has a wiring diagram using the existing wiring.

Oh, and alternators come in left handed and right handed varieties, depending on which side of the engine they mount. You can swap from right to left or vice versa by taking out the three long screws, rotating the pulley end casting by 120 degrees, and drilling the threaded hole which becomes the mounting hole. Or of course buy the correct one in the first place! Most alternators are clockwise rotation as standard, but just a few (E type jaguar) had anticlockwise fans.
