Timing on unleaded valves

Afternoon All!

I had a play with the timing today - they don't make it easy to see the marks do they! I got it set up somewhere between 5 and 10 deg in advance of TDC. I'm going back up one evening this week with a paintbrush and some white paint to make the job a bit easier, and hopefully more accurate than within 5deg!

Anyway, in the manual it says "If a standard grade fuel is being used, a static ignition setting of 6-8 deg... ... If a premium grade fuel is being used, a static ignition setting of 6-10 deg"

SO with unleaded, what do you think the timing should be? I would guess at towards 10deg?

my head doesn't seem to be the right shape to be able to get a good view of the the timing marks on the engine with a strobe in way so I normally get it running following the static set up procedures in the book, then once it is running I adjust it by slowly moving the dizzy (while the engine is still running) till it runs best. I then err it slightly towards being more retarded than advanced and go for a drive. If it 'pinks' when driving up hill in too higher gear then I advance it a bit more, if it doesn't then I retard it a bit more.

You want it retarded as much as possible without pinking. if you advance it too much it will start to overheat.

This way you are setting your engine (as opposed to the one in the book) to the fuel you are using.

Then again this could be why my cars always run so bad....

Sam is right, except he has it back to front, If it pinks/knocks or runs harsh then it,s over advanced. If it,s flat up the top end and running hot, it,s retarded.
Unleaded has a faster burn rate than leaded, so a few degrees of retard is usually necessary from STD :)

"You,re only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

With no mechanical fan and the rad moved forward 4 inches I found it easy to get the strobe in and set the timing spot on[8)][^] But it still pinked like crazy[V] So I did the same as Sam and tweaked (retarded) it until it stopped.
