I wired it like this:)

As Alan said first thing is to check if the solenoid is OK - just run a wire straight from the battery and touch it to the positive side and listen for the click. If that's OK check your wiring with a test lamp/meter or sticking your tongue across the terminals[}:)] If there's nowt there then by-pass the relay, if it works then the relays either wrong or duff:I

After much testing and trying I have to admit defeat! ...I have (for now) pulled all the wiring out and started again.....I have just fed a switch from the fuse box, then onto the solonoid with an illuminator so I can see its on....just have to remember to turn it off when not in 3rd or 4th .........drove it round the block and all works fine, although have yet to take it for a nice long run.....The exhaust is just tapping on the side skirt a little (its very tight between that and the rear wheel...may just get the grinder and hack some away (in the nicest possibe way lol)

You could take the supply through the inhibitor switch and then you would protect the gearbox, no self cancelling though:I

i have a friend of a friend who is an auto electrician so when I save a few pennies I might get him to take a look for me, as it is now is pretty much how smurfs was so I kind of got used to it anyway ..........it would be a shame to waste that lovely £15 aelf cancelling switch ...

Tim wired up the OD on his J4 the same way without any problem and has been running it that way for years. I must admit the self cancelling way is ideal but Harveys isn't and it's fine.
I'm always inspired just got to work up the enthusiasm to do the mundane bits, but it won't be long:I

There is a way using two ordinary relays but I've no idea how it works:I
Try as i might I still can't get a Flymo disguised as a Commer[8)]

Spare a Commer Guv?
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

went for about a 20 mile spin today and it all works ...kind of!

It goes into overdrive fine but is reluctant to disengage....I think probably the solonoid is sticking in the on position a bit, I'm sure if I take the cover off and lube it, then it will be fine..

the exhaust makes a significant difference to the uphill struggles[8D]

The sticky solenoid is only to be expected. I wonder when the last time it was use:I

I'm a bit cross with myself because yesterday I actually got an 8mm spanner and a can of oil and put it under the van to specifically do the job while I was crawling around checking the wiring...time got on and i thought I'd leave it til another day lol:I:D
