Tigger's Bouncing!!!!

Thankyou Mr P[8D] ...in honesty if this is a purpose factory thing? I mean in reality how many of these gearboxes fitted to vans do not have this vent completely blocked with dust, grease etc......surely no service mechanic has ever took the time to unblock/clean it ....seems very bizzare to me,,,,

ok, so i know its a vent but how does it work? what should it do and why?...why doesn't oil pee out of it? ...just mystified?

As the gearbox heats up the oil expands, it it wasn't for the breather it would seep out of the seals. The baffle plate stops the oil being sprayed up that far as there are only slots in it big enough for the selectors, take the top off and you'll see what I mean, its only half a dozen little bolts.

Ok, so yes I understand the theory...so, given that so many if not all gearboxes vents are probably or almost certainly blocked, why do they just keep on working? ..or maybe they dont and nobody actually realises the problem .............oooh for once I'm trying to have a grown up conversation:I

Probably one of the reasons why they leak[xx(] it won't stop them working unless they run out of oil:I

Don,t lose any sleep over it Colin, it,s not that important ;)
Gearboxes don,t have to contend with any pressure, unlike an engine. So they don,t really need much of a breather :)

Look under any Commer and you'll find a liberal coating of oil around the gearbox - thar she blows:)

seriously would it be better to put a self tapper in it to stop crud getting in? or just leave it as is...........I know Mr P said poke a split pin in it....can't see the point, it will just block it up anyway and give the crud something to cling to? .........and long term it could rust and then I'll have a broken piece of rusty metal in my box[:0]

A split pin would act as a 'jiggle pin' as Paul says and would jiggle about keeping the hole clear, but I don't thing there are many gearboxes with one fitted. I might fit one though when I take Harvey's box out again:)
