Something Jon said a couple of weeks ago has stuck in my mind .....and something I kinda noticed with smurf ,,,,,either the engine or the diff is out of 'true' to the center of the van..the measurements from center of gearbox to center of mounts have 7mm difference! .........so, is the engine not central or is the diff not central??

OMG 7mm[:0] sure that's not 8 1/2[}

The diff is offset but the prop universal joints take up the difference.

The problem is that I have 9'' readily availabvle at short notice, but it just doesn't seem to fit?? A trim down doesn't appeal really, it would seem to be a painfully dragged out experience...

are you sure that your engine will accept the 10 spline gearbox?the later ones had the fine spline hunter engine and wont match

I'm told I just need to swap the clutch plate for an Alpine or Bedford CA one...is this not correct?

The o/d we fitted to Jon,s highwayman was a 10 spline, just got the earlier matching plate
It did turn out that reverse was on the opposite side though, so had to remove the spring from the gear housing :I

The engine and gearbox will go together just fine, its only the clutch plate that`s different and has a fine or coarse spline not the shaft into the spigotquote:

Hmm, Euston we may have a problem? contrary to what I thought was oil coming from the inhibitor switch it seem I have a hole[:0] I put the little red straw from a can of WD40 in and it went in a bout 2"....whats missing? can I just put a small self tapper in to fill the hole and stop oil spraying out or is it spose to be there??

My guess is that it's a breather hole, being so fine and on the highest point - possibly missing a 'jiggle' pin to only allowing venting under pressure. Be interesting to know an expert's definitive answer though

Yep it's a breather, you can't push the straw in any further because of the baffle plate, it's sandwiched between the top housing and the gearbox you should be able to see it - a very thin steel plate. You can see the breather on this pic of Harvey's gbox but can't quite make out if there's anything blocking it.
It's unlikely that oil will get out more like grit getting in, I would push a short split pin into it to partially block it.
