Thowman's PB

A long day yesterday at the workshop. Started off by filling various holes with P40, then sanding them down with my powerfile. Welded in the repaired battery box and then treated the whole of worked upon area to a coating of Schultz, and it now looks lovely and black. Then, with Barry's help - he'd come over in Peggy to have a look at some of her little problems - we removed the NS axle shaft in order to replace the oil seal. As we were undoing the bolts, a poo coloured oil substance started to leak out of it, and once removed there was a load of sludge in the axle tube that Barry removed with a Land Rover starting handle. Fortunately the bearing came off by hand - don't know if it is meant to or not - and we disassembled the hub. The bearing didn't seem to have any play in it, although it didn't sound great so it had a good clean in brake cleaner. Cleaned all the other bits in the parts cleaner and replaced the oil seal in the housing on the press - it was the smaller of the two. Put it all back together with plenty of sealer, and put it all back together again - and now finally got around to replacing the rear brake cylinders and rear flexible hose. They all bled really easily, and the pedal is now rock hard and hopefully with the new cylinders I won't have any of the brake problems.

Finally, we tried to replace the accelerator cable, and after fiddling around for half an hour, discovered that it's not long enough, so had to oil the old one and replace it. I have a weber carb, you see, so I guess the cables aren't the same. With the standard new cable, the throttle wouldn't close enough to be against the idle screw - which means it's not got enough outer cable in it... Is there a different one? The old one is okayish - and will do for now.

So, today I have a small about of finishing to do, to hoover out all of the debris from the inside from several days of cutting, grinding, sanding and scraping, and then and MOT booked for 3.

Fingers crossed!

Peggy can do 78mph!
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Babs is down the MOT station right now. Tester asked me "Where are these from then? US?". I had to point out that it was actually made in Dunstable (Tring being less than 10 miles away from there).

Tested the brakes in the field - and she now pulls up nice and straight. So, drove her down and dropped her off, leaving her with the tester and assistant trying to look at the chassis plate underneath the sliding bed. Not the easiest thing to do.......

Fitted the replacement quarterlight glass yesterday. I ended up having to drill out the top rivet and remove it - which wasn't difficult seeing as the bottom frame has long since departed to the land of rust. Once I had the window out, I could bash the frame and seal on with a mallet, and then refit. Took the opportunity to weld the frame shut by welding a bolt onto the quarterlight frame and door frame, so the quarterlight cannot be opened anymore and therefore make the Babs a little more secure. Did the same with the other side, as there is also no lock on that. Splendid. Took her home, gave her a wash and all I have to do now is clean out the inside and load up, ready for departure on Friday.

A quick update.....

Following Bab's engine woes on the way to the Welsh Commer Weekend, where she won the breakdown award for one of her big ends going a few miles from the campsite, I have eventually got around to starting the repairs.

With the help of Baz and another mate, we removed the engine and gearbox in about 3 hours - which I guess is not too bad for a first time, but I guess having a ramp to remove the gearbox makes a difference. In fact, it came out a lot easier than expected. Now the engine is waiting on the engine stand for dismantling. Turning it over by hand, there is no doubt that one of the big ends has gone. More to follow this week when the dismantling starts.

Thanks Baz & Rich
