Theres life in the old dog yet

My Escort turbo diesel one is 12" (I think)and it works well. No cowl but fits in nicely with only a small overhang at the bottom of the rad, any bigger and you may have trouble actually getting it in:I Puller better than a pusher:)

I see with the 13" you can only fit it as a pusher - I think it will need to be the 12" - the fan that I bought that doesnt fit has a 14" diameter but i suppose its more about the fan efficiency

ok, 12" ordered....

by the way, if its of interest to anyone, this is the company that deals in the diesel injector / fuel pump parts for older engines - he wont do orders by credit cards as he was recently fleeced but will take paypal if you pay the paypal fees and cheques

kenlowe fan arrived today - and the replacement injector clamps.

the fan is on but not wired in. final injector fitted - fuel system vented and purged, went for a start. Battery soon died, it was charged a week ago and has been connected to a 20W solar panel with charge controller since. It cranked for about 30 seconds before giving up the ghost. I think its far too small for a diesel or knackered.

In the end I jump started it from the landy, immediately the crank speed was much faster - however it took about a minute of cranking with me manually priming the lift pump. It definately runs a bit quieter since having the injectors done and removing the mechanical fan - lots of crap out of the exhaust for the first minute though.

now to plumb in the kenlowe and put the recently sound proofed cowling on to see if the sound levels have improved in the cab

I have the thermostart working - but a top tip! dont spray easystart on it or you get a flame that shoots out and singes your ar*e - in the end I got it going without the easystart but had to manually pump the lift pump a lot whilst cranking - now the K&N is on I cant use easystart so I have to make it work without

so my diaphragm in the lift pump has possibly split - theres very little resistance on it

Been playing with the old fire engine this weekend. That has the Perkins diesel in. The flame thrower works on it, but it still takes lots of heat and cranking from cold. Also creates a nice smokescreen, so the neighbours can't see what your doing :I

went to a battery specialist today - took the 20Ah 500amp cold cranking battery that was fitted on the dog - they fell about laughing, the woman even got the old boy from out the back to say - "ere Arthur he's only been trying to start a perkins with this little thing"

tappety tappety on the computer brought up the recommended spec for a perkins 4108 engine - a 110Ah 720A cold cranking heavy duty job - a gert big beast

what a difference! - still took a while to start but but am now in the process of flushing the engine, have bought some nice thick oil as well as the stuff in it was a bit too thin, this should help with start up compression.... fingers crossed

oh and by the way, the kenlowe fan is fitted and seems to be working, might fit an overide switch on the dash

the dreaded white smoke has reared its ugly head!

Went to start the Dog when I got home tonight, took a couple of minutes of cranking (in 20 second spells) Whilst cranking and for a couple of minutes after starting there was quite a lot of smoke. It had a slight blue tinge suggesting oil but was much whiter than yesterday - and less blue. It seemed to hang in the air suggesting it might be steam

After about 5 minutes it all settled down to a clear exhaust - I ran the engine for around 45 minutes so I could tweak the thermostat on the Kenlowe fan.

I checked the oil - still nice and clean from yesterdays oil change with no sign of emulsification.Rad Water had no oil - but had dropped slightly (but I do have a small leak from the thermostat housing)

so my question is - if indeed there is water in the combustion system where is it coming from and why isnt it in my oil? Is it worth being cautious and changing the head gasket (which will also let me check some other things while its off

At least its running quieter now

answers on a postcard please

the way i see it m8, with the amount of time, effort and money thats gone into the van it couldnt hurt to change it as then you know its not going to fail anytime soon. but if its been started and stopped alot that may be why she is a bit smokey. and before asuming the worst it may be worth sorting the stat housing and topping the water up first. as it may just be that.

Probably a silly question but have you changed the diesel filter? A blocked filter will cause all kinds of trouble including poor starting, white smoke, black smoke etc. I would also be tempted to give it a good long run, not just idling on the drive. White smoke does indicate water but can also be caused by condensation sitting in the exhaust, an engine produces an awful lot of water when cold and if not driven far enough to dry it out it will smoke when you start the engine again.

Bloody Commer`s!
