Theres life in the old dog yet

went to start the dog up this morning - dead battery, so thats on charge. It will be interesting to see if a fully charged battery effects the crank speed enough to get it going. Methinks the alternator may not be working properly so have just invested in a multimeter....

its not a glow plug - its a thermostart, similar to a glow plug but with a small fuel connection point

panky emailed me a thread from a boating forum where a chap was selling a rocker cover gasket and 4 thermostart plugs

I didn't notice if he left any contact details, you may have to sign up on their forum to get in touch:I

How refreshing

plus it was pickup only - however I have found a local independant parts supplier who specialises in old engine parts (you csn tell its a good place in my opinion when the three guys behind the counter are over 55 and wear shirts and ties underneath their brown warehouse coats - have lots of pens in their top pockets and half glasses on the ends of their noses)and there was a long queue.......

one has worked on perkins engines for 30 years and new all about the perkins in the Dog. They have quoted 150 for a full engine strip, with complete inspection report (every component) - however I would need to take the engine to them.

Its something to consider if I cant rectify the issues. Their advice was to go for compression tests & injector inspections before worrying about engine strips - they were very helpfull and said they were happy to go through things over the phone as I work.

Hopefully the battery will be charged by tomorrow so I can see if a full charge cranks it fast enough to make a difference

well, just put the freshly charged battery on. Tried the thermostart for 20 seconds - plenty of smoke coming from the air intake manifold, cranked it over - nearly fired. Tried the thermostart for another 15 seconds cranked again - after about 10 seconds the perkins came to life.

Ive been thinking about the lack of fuel supply to the thermostart plug. The dog was probably fitted with an oil bath air filter so im thinking there may have been sufficient oil residue from this to give the same effect as having a drip of diesel

nothing at the moment, no filter at all - but luckily the oil from the rocker cover gasket leak has given the area a good coating of oil which is getting sucked in

it reminds me of the film Genevieve which was on the other day - when the guy drives past and shouts "you want to try a new flint!"

We saw that and another good line is when Kenneth Moore remarks to their rivals:-
"if you'll take my advise, old boy, the next time that engine dies you'll take it out and bury it... ha ha!

ok, I have probably commented on the following on other threads - but thought I would tie them all in here.

took the injectors out today - whilst doing so found the engine block number which thankfully confirms this is the perkins 108 rather than the 107 which means 55bhp instead of 41.

the injectors showed lots of signs of coking and the copper sealing rings look like they have been leaking by as well. So I have put them into the local independant parts centre who specialise in classic spares for overhaul and calibration - they are also getting me a new rocker cover gasket (it was pinched thats all)

I have taken the cowling & engine lid off and jetted the radiator to clear all the years of dust and debris (just a hand pump sprayer as I didnt want to damage it) managed to get a fair amount of crap out from between the fins - so well worth doing. I also combed a few dented fins back into shape. I am thinking about putting the electric kenlow fan in, I think it should fit once I remove the engine driven fan.

I have also had a look at the gearbox linkage, the linkage at the actual gearbox feels ok - so next stop is the gear lever itself - but to be honest I dont think I have the knowledge to do much about it at the moment - will have to have a read up.

Im just off to the DIY shop to see if I can get some insulating blanket for the engine lid and something to make a rubber seal from

just measured the air inlet manifold, any air filter housing I get will need a 60mm hole - can i fit a K&N straight onto this?
