Theres life in the old dog yet

Come on guys you know who you are. There may be circumstances beyond your control so let him know the score - but if there isn't give the man a break.
No need to drag it all over the forum, you never know he might answer a text;)

Summer's Coming.....
Trust me

We understand mate. I remember having this conversation with you months ago now about folk not picking up vans. Your too kind mate really you are. Get tough though cos its not only much needed revenue, its your reputation at stake too. Time to call time on the people expecting free storage for their van over the winter months. No money, no storage end of!!!

I think the time has come for Woolfy to be more 'robust'. Write to each one of them explaining the issues and giving them a couple of weeks to make arrangements. Make it clear that if they want their vehicles 'stored' it will cost them. Unpaid bills will be dealt with by the sale of the vehicles (via legal means obviously). Those who make no contact will have their vehicles stored outside at a reduced cost etc etc.

He's not running a Commer charity, it's a business.

What your doing as a whole is fabulous for Commers and especially as you are a fan. BUT it is a business and business IS business. I'm too soft alot of the time with invoicing, and it is a pain to now - for the majority of jobs ask for payment upfront but it has become the norm. The above from Baz pretty much sums it up perfectly I'd say.

I know this problem of too many half restored classics on the premises. It's a combination of a) late payers b) having too much work on the go at once.

A is solved by agreeing with the customer, in advance of the work starting, a staged written restoration plan and staged costs eg £xxx on strip down. £xxx on welding completed. £xxx after paintwork finished etc. Then both sides know where they are on the plan. After each stage invite them in to look at your lovely work, and pay you.

B it's tempting to take on a lot of work at once, but it can come back to bite you.
I think its better (and less stressful) to concentrate more or less on one vehicle from start to finish, then you have a happy customer who pays the final balance and leaves, spreading the good word. Then ring the next customer up to tell them to bring their van in. If you cant start work on their van until August or whatever, once you have built up a good reputation people will
wait.

Cheers
Jules

have any of the slackers actually had the guts to contact wolfie since the comments on this thread started? well my message is blunt and admittedly quite selfish - - Guys, your actions are hindering MY restoration, preventing others from having restorations as Wolfie cant fit them in his workshop because of your dormant vehicles and you are hurting the Woolfie personally in terms of stress & damage to his reputation. Your lazyness / lack of interest will ultimately destroy this mans business and alienate you from others within the Commer owner family

you have all seen over the last year or so what we can achive down here at the work shop so it isnt a case of too much work it really is just space issues. and the dreaded problem where people want their vans restoring and once your nearing the end they start to find out that other things need doing to the vans to finish them off but are reluctant to cough up the extra cash to get it there, and so the vans sit dormant and taking up space. to be honest with you i now have a couple more vans waiting too come into the workshop for work needed on them, but first i need to crack on with lees to get it back up to steam, and then im goin to see how things go with these other ones and then decide if its all worth while and if im going to carry on doing them ,or maybe move away from them and concentrate on other quick turn around vehicles instead. because all the time your messed around the bills and rent keep clicking by and i aint a big company who can stomach the losses.im just a one man band and enthusiast trying to help others fulfill their dreams but i cant do it at my expense.[?]:(

Seriously Martin, if people aren't responding to your requests then just put their vehicles outside so you have space to work on the ones you're being paid to do. If they start to deteriorate then that's their fault, not yours.

I saw Dog yesterday Lee - the vans looking good. It was a squeeze in the barn but within the week some are leaving so it won't be long! And the paint jobs on some on the van about to leave was excellent!
