Personaly I think I would just wire the Kenlowe to a remote switch on the dash and use it when needed, that would take all the guess work out. :)

Bloody Commer`s!

I've fitted one of these adjustable fan controllers to my Imp, works great. just cut the top hose and fit, wire it up and adjust.

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

A lot of modern cars have the sensor in the bottom hose. The reasoning being that you only want to fan to run when the radiator alone cannot cope. I may get around to relocating my sensor in the bottom hose one day to see how it affects things.

If you stick with Rootes engines then a Rapier lump is the way to go, Colin Hart fitted one to his Tourstar and it goes very well - I know I was behind him on the run out last Saturday:D

would that be the 1725cc Holbay fitted to the H120 fastback, that looks a decent lump!

No just the standard twin carb ally head engine from the Rapier or Sceptre. I think Colin's engine is fitted with a twin choke Solex while mine has a big SU bolted on:)

I gave up on the Solex as it was a pain and fitted an SU in it's place. Tim modified the alloy manifold to accept the SU and it works fine :) There's probably a link somewhere[?]

Sounds like Colin told you after two cans! :p

Took the Dog to work today (26 miles)

some of this is mentioned on another thread however

whilst here have checked the diff oil - was about an egg cup full - flushed and filled with EP100

Gearbox wasnt much better - had about a pint of very old oil in it. - Topped up with 10W40 that we use in our big perkins emergency diesel generators.

And while I was at it - and was stood next to the 50 gallon drum I also changed the engine oil - good to get rid of the crap produced when starting up after rebuilding the engine.

Isnt amazing how much quieter the drive is when you have oil in your gearbox & diff!

Hands up I had never checked it - I also took the opportunity to re-pack the propshaft universal joints

It will be interesting to see if I notice any difference on the way home

just got home, same oil pressure issue, once temp above half way the oil pressure drops. warning light every roundabout and traffic light - even at low revs in fourth. I am not losing oil - and the weep at the pressure gauge surely cant be effecting things

might just take the bulb out!

anyway im off to unwrap the cherry bomb!

... Cherry bomb is on,

In my opinion it is quieter than the baffled box I have taken off - maybe it just sounds quieter because it is a deeper tone - all I can really hear now is the fuel pump clacking away. Its all suspended on big Jubilees until I relocate the suspension brackets

definitely happy with it

I drove the Dog from berden to Gedney this morning. Left at 03:30 to dodge the traffic. 8 miles in and the headlights went dim, the cab filled with smoke - looking at the engine cowling I could see a bright orange Glow THE DOG WAS ON FIRE.
Now I know why we carry fire extinguishers!
I lifted the cowling an inch and gave it a blast - fire extinguished.
Now to assess the damage
My brand new alternator positive lead was charred and burned out, I couldn't work out why. There was also a puddle of oil, but it was under the fuel pump side which never leaks oil. But directly under the fire damage
Grabbing my fettling kit and head torch I rewired the alternator and went for a start.
The engine started immediately, good volts so the alternator was fine.
I looked back in the engine bay and to my horror could see a jet of oil spraying out all over my new wiring.
There was a pinhole in the capillary tube that goes from the engine block to the oil pressure gauge.
It looks like this jet of oil was the cause of the fire, igniting off the exhaust. Luckily I had something in the toy box to blank it
I went for it and continued my journey. Managed to complete the rest of the journey without incident ( cherry bomb makes a definite difference) having no oil pressure gauge gave me one less thing to worry about but I did stil get the oil warning light at very low revs
But the dog is re-homed - now to clean up the dry powder I which incidently is brilliant for highlighting weeps and leaks

Jeeesus that was close[:0] luckily it was oil, I'd dread to think what would have happened on a petrol engine[xx(]
But at least the dog made it home:) Time to check your fire extinguishers everyone.

Just to add, trying to work out the mode of ignition, the fire seems to coincide with the kenlowe fan cutting in for the first time. I think the pinhole caused an oil vapour cloud to build up, as soon as the fan cut in it blew this concentrated mist onto the exhaust manifold. I can see charring on the very edge of the area where the exhaust wrap ends and bare exhaust downpipe begins. That extinguisher was the best 25 quid I have spent!
