I jumped the gun - the alternator is goosed, my nice new wiring was in vain - started the engine off a spare battery and found the alternator is kicking out a massive 0.4 volts. I have taken it off (which was not fun as it straddles the coolant suction (lower) hose.

now to find a replacement

still, the battery is nearly as big as the engine 105AH, 720 starting Amps so I will be able to sneak a few daytime jaunts.

didnt tax today as its the 31st

small amount of fettling today,

taking advantage of the alternator being out gave me the opportunity to fix the dipstick tube which was leaking at its connection to the engine block. Replaced the rotten jubilees on the block suction hose joint (can only do this with the alternator off)

I also had a look at the masses of wires. The old alternator wires lay across the engine - Have been replaced and run through the space in front of the radiator. It was worth doing as when I peeled the tape back from the alternator to warning light wire I found it had more joins than Justin Biebers facebook page! - found a few wires that didnt go anywhere so they have been removed (lets hope it doesn't turn out that they did go somewhere)

I have also done my mod to assist the engine bay air flow - I will post a couple of photos in a bit - worth noting that when I cut the hole through the floor I managed to pull out a plug of wood approx 1.5" think - now thats a solid floor!

heres my engine bay mod - the plan is that the airflow under the van floor acts as a venturii across my added pipework - causing an improved air flow in the troublesome top right corner of the engine bay by the exhaust manifold

It will be interesting to see if your plumbing works:)
Bummer about the alternator but you can make sure the new one has the 'W' connection for the tacho you want to fit.

went to get diesel.
after filling up turned the key.... dead as a dodo,
luckily it was the solenoid lead for the starter motor that had fallen off, so plugged it back on and set off home.
decided to go the long way - round the dreaded dual carriageway
35 fine
38 fine
40 fine
43 -- overheated and boiled the radiator,,, &@*cks

got home, emptied the coolant and filled with neat antifreeze to give me a 130 degree C boiling point.
Also connected a lamp to the kenlowe to see when it was cutting in. I know it cuts in fine stationary but wanted to see what happened when on the move

Lo and behold, the kenlowe was cutting out over 30mph - time for some head scratching, and then the lightbulb pingged above my head

The kenlowe activates via a thermocouple which wedges inbetween the radiator fins.

when stationary and at low speeds this is fine, the radiator transmits heat into the thermocouple and hey presto

however it seems that at speed, the mass of air hitting the front of the rad (where the thermocouple protrudes) is chilling the thermocouple and it isnt sensing the true radiator temperature

to prove this I put the kenlowe on manual, and just completed a 25 miler round the country lanes without any overheating

I will fettle the cut in so it comes in much earlier, and do a proper job with the indicator lamp at some point

Just happy this is the longest Journey the Dog has done without overheating since I collected it

Tape the Kenlowe probe to the top hose and adjust from there.
