Hi Lee, don't waste money on transporting it. Just drive it there (once road legal) with your breakdown service number primed just in case. If it does break down get it recovered (free) to Lincs.

if anyone out there is needing advice on perkins engines (and other older engines) I found this sites forum to be quite useful

http://www.wellandpower.net/forums/index.php

good info for perkins / cummings etc

put proper coolant in tonight and let it run for another hour....

even after 24hrs rest the engine started first time - without easy start. This is the first time I have been able to start the engine from clap cold without any tinkering. This has to be a good!

That is very good, every little win will boost your confidence after all the grief you've had[8D] Did you need to use the Thermostart?

No, just turned the key - cranked for a couple of seconds and roared into life, didnt even have to prime the lift pump

Another little fettle tonight that might split the vote!

I put exhaust wrap around the exhaust manifold and the first 18 inches of downpipe - the purpose being to reduce the overall engine bay temperature when running.

Theres a lot of debate on the pro's and cons of using this - mainly on performance tweaking forums where they cite engine fires due to badly wrapped pipes causing localised very hot spots - and increased corrosion rates. (but these petrol heads are talking about manifolds that glow red hot!)

The pro side of the argument mentions that keeping the heat in the manifold causes better exhaust flow - to be honest I dont think its going to make much improvement on an old perkins lump.

Without the wrap, with me gunning the engine the manifold would reach 120 - 130 degrees (centigrade)on the infra red gun, 95 degrees on idle

with the wrap the exhaust manifold now sits at 65-70c on idle (radiator at 80 degrees) and after a minute of engine thrashing the manifold gets to 80 degrees (radiator at 92 degrees) - so as you can see a big improvement on the amount of heat being emitted

I need to tidy up the raggedy ends but I think it will prove beneficial

Was thinking of doing this myself so thanks for the info. I am going to soundproof under the engine lid and around the sides so manifold wrapping with those sorts of figures will be very beneficial!

Hasta la supervista baby

but remember mines a diesel - dont know how this will work if you have a petrol - their exhaust run much hotter I believe

I will be sealing the bandage tonight with some rocol Foliac Manganese. we use it at work as a high temp high pressure sealant (up to 600 centigrade) it sets hard but flexible and can be easily cut with a knife if I ever have to prise it off - and should stop the bandage from fraying

the foliac has worked a treat.

I have also renewed the insurance - and once Martin sends me some new wiper blades its off to the MOT station....

I wrapped my manifold as I was getting a problem with fuel vapourisation due to high under hatch temperatures which wrapping fixed. I can vouch for this stuff ;):

The foliac coating has now "gone off" and the exhaust bandage is now solid and sealed in - Once I get some new wipers I can book it in for an MOT.

I have also ordered this trim:

to go round the removable engine cover sections. Once it comes I will report back on its effectiveness - it was cheap so worth a punt!

no worries,
windscreen wipers arrived today - thanks Martin M
I will however need to bend and tweak a bit as the edge of the windscreen gets missed.
I did a set of running checks this evening have discovered one problem
the indicators work fine, however if i put the hazards on only the left hand front and rear come on
If i have the right indicator on & the hazards on - it all works perfectly. Do you think the MOT man will let me get away with that?
