Ive had a bad back for a few months but i decided pain or no pain im going to put the v8 in the commer
ive gone for a 3.5 rover v8 with a borg warner 35 box,this box is quite small for an auto box and will fit relativly high up as i plan to lower the commer too
her is the old girl before i cut her to peices
I started by lowering the block into the engine bay a result of that was a big hole filled by a bigger engine so i decided to cut her about and see what i could do
This is when i decided putting the engine further back will allow me the room for a decent cooling system
In the picture below i have cut from the engine bay rear bulkhead back to the first cross member you come to and lowered the engine back in, i now have a hole big enough for the big engine
I can honestly say its tight side to side but this almost fits straight away the only problem is the gear box fouls off the original gearbox mounts and rubs on the crossmember
Answer to this is to cut them off
i plated over the exposed side of the crossmember with 2.2mm steel as i didnt take to much out so this should be sufficient to stregthen it up
The next time i lowered the engine in i mocked it up on some wooden blocks and lined the gearbox flange up to the prop
The gearbox casing runs about 15mm away from the new notch in the crossmember and sits in quiet a nice levelish position
So with it sitting kind of in the right place i went and raided the offcuts at a local engineering firm and started making the gearbox mounts
The box is 40mmx40mm with a wall thickness of 3mm attached with a 3mm thick plate onto the rubber gearbox mounts (photos to follow when removed for paint)
with the box section in place some proper measurments were made and a mockup carboard chassis to boxsection mount was made (i do this as a rule so i can transfer the design to plate again 3mm
This is as far as ive got as my bandsaw has gone boom and im awaiting a new one but not bad for a day and a half of work
Once the new saw is here i shall be updating regularly so keep an eye out and i hope to hear your responces soon
