temperature gauge

It's wired through the voltage stabiliser and if that's faulty then you will get an erratic reading. Does the fuel gauge wander about as well? that's fed off the stabiliser too.
 
It says in the manual when testing the voltage stabiliser it must be the right way up. Has it been moved or somehow dislodged?
 
Panky, the fuel gauge is fine - no leaping about.

SOupdragon - I haven't had any mechanical work done in a year - last week I had new seatbelts installed, and that required messing about under the hood. Could it have happened then?

DISCLAIMER - no idea what / where voltage stabilizer is. :rolleyes:
 
The stabiliser looks like a relay and gives out a constant 10 volts to the temperature and fuel gauges so varying engine speed doesn't affect the reading. But if someone has been under the hood they could have dislodged the wire on the temperature sender that sends a signal to the gauge.

On my sender, that flat connector can get loose in the top rivet allowing it to rotate slightly, giving erratic readings sometimes.
 
Have you tried connecting the wire to earth and seeing how it reads as it could be a simple as a faulty switch (It should show constant boiling)
 
I will investigate this evening when I have some daylight to explore under the hood and dash. Thank you all for the info and suggestions!
 
Now my voltage stabiliser may have packed up. I measured voltage between the 2 contacts. So it gets volts and can I assume at least one of the guages is connected and makes a circuit? To test volts out can I just put volt meter on ‘out’ and earth?
