Depends on what category they give it :(
If it is category A then neither the vehicle or any part can be reused at all.

They do not have to sell it back to you if they don't want to (I am researching written off vehicles) and if you are making a claim (which I assume you are) then I would guess that it is a Category A (total write off).

That really is a blow.

But taking a different approach, surely this is a vehicle of particular historical interest. There must be bodies who can overturn a random insurance company's decision. What about the Heritage association whatwhat for example, those who instigated the production of new bodies for the Mini, MGBs etc.? Maybe they can assist and revoke a decision by the insurers. And there must be other associations with some powers too.

The worst that could possibly happen here was that the van disappeared, just because the insurance company decided that they won't repair it on grounds of cost (which, in all honesty, is their business in the end of the day - they're not charitable companies with a heart and soul).

I cannot imagine other than if the insurance company stick to their unbelievable decision in this case, the owner (you, Telfordbob!) would have any right to decide to keep the vehicle - although without a payout from the insurance company. It would of course be a terrible blow, but the price the insurance company calculates for the rebuild will be many times higher than the real cost would be if all good men and women in the Commer clan help out where we can in assisting with parts, labour and whatever else. At least it would be an alternative to letting go of this invaluable early Commer !

My heart aches from hearing the insurers verdict, but if I were you, Telfordbob, I would never-never-never let them have their way with this, and never in my life hand over that vehicle! And as the owner of the vehicle, I cannot see that they have any powers to take it from you as you are the legal owner of it - and not them. Unless they've paid you for the vehicle, of course, which I suppose they haven't so far.

If it is anything to navigate by, any 50 year old vehicle in this country (Norway, that is) is defined as an item of national interest, and for this reason you need the state's permission to sell it out of the country if you wanted to. And this is no joke. Sending it out of the country without such permission would leave you with a trial and most likely a jail sentence. Turning that on it's head, any insurance company over here attempting a similar act of ignorance would most likely be ordered to arrange for restoration or let go of the vehicle so that other party could restore it.

All the best of luck to you on this one. It must be a terrible time going through hell not once, but now twice. But don't give up, whatever you do.

:)

Which insurance company? The Rootes Archive Centre have contacts with insurance companies. has to be worth involving them to confirm the historic significance of the vehicle.

Whatever happens, under no circumstances let anyone take it away.

If i were you i would pull the claim and pay for it yourself. To the insurance its just an old camper that has no value,we all know what the goverment think of old cars they want them gone [:(!][:(!][V][V]

Closing the gate after the horse but advice for other people - always take a policy with salvage rights - not sure how much this applies with a write-off and the whole vehicle but it should remain your decision.

how can they say it is a write off ? when the experts here all say it can be restored :p ahh beyond ecconomical repair maybe but it is a historic vehicle & a rare early example I know they always ask whats it's value? also agreed value is worth looking into where you send pictures, but what good if they just try to wriggle out of paying for work to put it back into use.[V]

Bob needs to tell them what he wants IE transport to woolfy Martin basil
or for them to give a quote for work to sort it all out then with a little help from your friends here contributions of parts labour etc might just swing it fingers crossed.

I agree with Jon and Racer if you caqn withdraw the claim the van remains your property to do with as you like. Obviously you lose any financial help from the insurance company, but they always get it back from you in higher premiums anyway! [:(!]

'I intend to live forever - so far, so good'

Hello Bob,

Not been on forum for a while and so very, very saddened and horrified to see this here. I just can't believe that I am a member of the same human race as some people - I think there must be a sub division for the mindless and the barbaric. When they grow up do they become insurance assessors?

I will add my name to the contact lists for any spares you may need for this one - if I have it - it's yours. I have bits from 3 different vans currently filling the back of mine so finding space is good!

Some of the bits I have sadly are from a condemned coachbuilt PB that was in good nick and a member of the classic camper club and the insurance were insistent that it be crushed[:(!][V]

Good luck - got to be worth saving:)

Bessie - four star commerdation

just came on and followed this thread - very sad, had the same thing done to my van a few years ago, but was lucky that someone saw it happen and came out to find the fire brigade firing water in to it from the back door.

anyway, just wanted to say that you must do all you can to keep this vehicle - looks like you'll have no troublke getting it sorted from al the offers of help on this forum, and would make a fascinating story to follow.

food for thought. i spoke to bob the other night and kindly reminded him that he also needs to tell the insurers when they make him an offer on the van, about his registration plate, because i did a search for him on the web through a company called reg transferes, and they said that they would give him £1500.00 for the number and also an age related plate in return. so he now has options open to him.:p;)
