Tappetty Tap!!!!

Hi All!
Frodo is making a wierd tapping sound when in gear and driving. It almost sounds like asewing machine, and changes speed in line with engine revs. I thought it might be pinking, but have retarded the dizzy and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Also played around with the mixture and idle speeds. Apart from that, he's running really well!

I had issues with engine temperature, but have put a more open mesh on the radiator intake, and that seems to have sorted that.

I'd just like to get rid of the tapping....

Cheers Greg, that could be it - last time I did them was at a festival, so I may not have been giving the job the full attention it required! I'll have a look next weekend.

My holbay manual quotes all clearances cold. But in any event I would always do it cold as you get consistency and it's much much easier

Always adjust the iron head tappets hot, 12thou inlet 14thou exhaust.

I found adjusting tappets on the Commer a pig of a job. 1. Because the engine needs to be hot 2. Because even with the plugs out, in 4th gear and someone stronger than me (and I'm well 'ard) turning the rear wheel it's hard going turning the engine over 3. Becuase the engine will have cooled when doing step 2.

One of those jobs I should revisit, but have been putting off!

Hi Adam..........its easier to tighten the fan belt and turn the engine by pulling the fan round:D

My Hunter manual only gives the clearances for hot - 10 and 12 thou' for both engines.

Yup mine too panky, would be interested in a cold figure though. Would be easier and more accurate....

Try them at 8&10 and see. So long as they have SOME clearance when fully hot, the tighter the better as it will give more cam lift and less shock loading to the valve train. Might even go down to 6&8 [?]

Old thread I know. So I set my Hunter engine at .012 and .014 as per my manual - that might be wrong anyhow, looks like should be .010 and .012 from this thread. It also said if the heads been removed to add .002 to each, no wonder it sounded like a bag o spanners.

So Tim, setting to .008 and .010 won't cause any issues as long as the valve fully closes. I'll try re-setting them all tonight.

Hasta la supervista baby

I set Bonnies using an SPQR tappet adjuster, I set them on the tight side (the suggested number of clicks gave a little less than the recommended gaps of 12 and 14 thou in the Commer manual) and she runs like a sewing machine[^]
Need to do Harvey's again as he rattles his head off:I
