I know I said before, but the rad cowling has elongated holes for sdjustment with spacers on the bolts, just check them in case the fan is hitting somewhere....not always detectable if you turn the fan by hand, but when you start the engine it 'moves' ultimately it was the cause of smurfs water pump failure en route to Cambridge (best meet so far btw Chris):)

If you suspect the exhaust to be leaking then stuff an old rag over the end of the pipe when running and any leak will soon worsen for easy detection.

I'll give that a go Paul! I forgot to tell you all the funny thing that happened while I was up there listening to the engine. I was in the cab, with my head over the engine bay, when suddenly the noise started getting a lot worse, a really heavy thumping sound, getting louder and louder and louder...When the whole van was starting to vibrate with it, I got out of the cab smartish, and it was then I notied the chinook flying overhead - the barn is under one of the training paths from RAF Odiham, whih is about 10 miles away!

Sounds like a mechanical rattle to me,doesnt sound like the exhaust but its hard to tell without being there with your ears;)

A commer with boost will be appering on a screen near you soon!

Take a length of wooden dowl and put one end to your ear. Put the other end on various parts of the engine and you will soon narrow down where its comming from if its mechanical. Best to avoid the fan though...
Could be something like a balance weight has come off in the dizzy?

Well...alright then, maybe just a little...

Haven't had a chance to have another look yet, plus the battery died last time I went up, so have to get that on charge. Wedding at the weekend, but hopefully will pop up a couple of nights next week. Had a little play with the broomstick, and it sounded to me like the noise is coming from the rear of the engine, but need to discount the leaky exhaust before making any conclusions..

if your battery is old get a new one! don't want to hear about any more exploding batteries!

Chas, I know this may be a bit obvious, but does the noise vanish if you depress the clutch pedal??

Chris, the battery is only a couple of years old, I think it's more likely the alternator is on its way out - another thing to replace! Colin, I haven't actually done that as a check in it's own right, but I don't recall noticing any difference, but I'll add it to the list of things to try!
