It's driving me mad!!!!

Hello everyone, It's been a while since I was last on here, as I have been on an oil rig in the Gulf - not a great place to spend much time!

Anyway, now I am back on dry land, in good old Blighty, I have spent some time getting Frodo ready for lots of adventures this year.

He's running well, except for this annoying tapping sound, when the engine is under load - take your foot of the accelerator and it stops. I've checked the valve clearances (0.012" and 0.014") so its not that, and I have checked that nothing is clipping on the fan etc, but still can't find the culprit, its the under load bit thats got me foxed, anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like pinking (pre-ignition) to me. Try retarding the ignition a degree. Then go out and put it under load again. If it still does it retard another degree and so on until it stops. Different fuels can affect it.

I had a tapping like that, reset the tappets.....still there. It got louder very quickly followed by white smoke from the breather. My big ends went!
 
It was a cable tie being hit by the fan as it spun around had me worried
for a min!

use the old wooden broom handle trick
just press the handle against various parts of the cylinder head and block and put the other end to your ear.its amazing what you can hear
dont forget to take the brush off first:D:D

I'm worried that I might be being overreacting, but I'm also worried that there may actually be something wrong!

Might be worth lifting the rocker cover and looking to see that oil is getting to all the rockers/valves. Check the exhaust joint for sealing too. Could be anything, may be serious or stupid, as Steve says have a listen with a screwdriver and see if you can locate the area it,s coming from :)

get skate to go in frodo to the local classic friendly garage wearing something like a boiler suit ;)
they probably wont charge HER, got to be worth asking :)

Panky may have something......Tigger was making a horrid noise and that turned out to be the exhaust loose at the manifold...most wierd that it produces a 'tapping' noise when actually its air escaping....i guess anything is worth checking in the proccess of illimination...and def worth checking the rad cowling is not loose...:)

There is a small leak where the manifold joins the engine block.....Fingers crossed that's it! I won't get a chance to check now until next week. Thanks guys, I'll let you know how I get on!
