Swapping out electric fridge for propane

camping here is quite different from the UK; most of sites are wooded, and you don't always get water or electrical hookups.

That said, I'm wondering how difficult it would be to swap out the fridge to run on propane. The stovetop (hob) is a two burner propane, ( we don't use butane much here) on the same side as the fridge. The tanks are underneath on the opposite side of the camper.

Is there a combination option?

(I can't recall who shared photos of their interior, with the sink and burners under removable panels. Really great work ,especially flush mount fridge - makes me nuts having the damn door poking out..)

You can get three way fridges that work on mains, 12v and gas. We did have a small mains only fridge in Bonnie which was hidden behind a door but we really needed a bigger one that ran off gas. I got the biggest possible one that would fit in the space but because of the space needed behind it (flue) it does protrude from the unit - but only by the thickness of the fridge door. I re-painted the door panel to blend in a bit better with the furniture.

I think you can get more modern fridges that are slimmer but whatever you go for make sure the flue is piped in correctly, you don't want carbon monoxide seeping into the van:eek:
 
oh how absolutely LOVELY!!! The wood work is amazing.

There is no exterior flue at present; just a section of the countertop cut away with grating so the unit can 'breathe' I expect. There is a lot of space behind; 5 inches + I'd guess. .

A 3 way unit sounds ideal, and I happen to live very close to RV nirvana, so there ought to be plenty of options for me to explore.
I don't relish the thought of adding a piercing though.. :eek:

I know what you mean, I had to bore a hole through the side to fit the flue but better that than getting gassed:eek: The internal grating is really just to allow hot air to escape from the heat exchanger otherwise the fridge wouldn't work.
I found a flue finished that was from the same period on eBay so from the outside it looks as if it's always been there.
