I've been running the Commer on super unleaded for a while thinking to avoid the dreaded ethanol (Esso BP & Total have told me that their super unleaded does not contain any) but I'm now wondering if running on the higher octane is a good idea. Any thoughts.

I've been running all my cars, Commer and Morris, on bog standard supermarket unleaded for years with no adverse effect. I had been using an additive but don't bother with that now, you need to do a lot of miles or be putting the engine under a lot of strain to do any real damage with ordinary petrol. The main problem with ethanol on Commers seems to be the dreaded snakeskin - when the lining on the inside of the tank breaks down, only real answer to that is an new tank:I
I put some Shell V-max (the more expensive stuff) in my Morris 1000 the other day after reading about it in the owners club magazine. I had to slightly retard the ignition and BOY what a difference. Pulls so much better, I was really surprised and will be interested to see what the MPG is. So much nicer to drive- smoother and more power. I'm always tinkering with timing etc but this has made a real difference.
In the old days I used to get 38MPG regularly on 3 star petrol, on modern petrol only 30-32 mpg and that's driving slower -as I'm a bit more sensible now.
