Thanks Panky. Good to know an average price for a good quality van. I do think that the real value of a van is based on what a person is willing to pay - If a commer will put a smile on my face then i'm happy to pay for it, but i don't want to get ripped off. I had seen one at sunset campers in Bournemouth, it is up for £7K which seems a bit steep, but i was tempted. I think they are putting a VW price on it, unless there is anything special about it that i've missed?

That 7k van sold last year for about 2.5k i believe? Hasn't had no work on it in that time? Seller is defo cashing in on the VW prices. I wouldn't pay 7k for it out of principle. But then, principle don't put a happy Commer face on you does it. Your choice of course, but personally i'd think you were a bit mad. Hoping to go to Maxey yeah.

Value and Cost are often quite different things with old cars/vans/bikes. VW prices are quite easy to find out as there are so many of them and they change hands frequently. Valuing Commers is much harder. I looked at every single van I could find for sale over a 3 month period - which was a total of 4 vans! All of which needed work.
How much more should an early (tax exempt) autosleeper be worth over a late coach built? Originality? Upgrades? Nice interior? New MOT?
A bit of wielding and a few panels (£500-£1k), a respray at £1-2k, a set of tyres (£300), sort the mechanics out (£300), tart up the interior (£200)…
Multiply this by how much you think your own time is worth and the costs of travelling all around the country looking at vans weekend after weekend.
Assuming you’re not planning on buying and selling the vans to make a profit - and your alternative is buying a VW then there is a lot to be said for buying a van that you can use straight away and you like.
If you know how much they paid for it, and they’ve had it hanging around for a while try putting in a low offer. You never know.

Cheers. I'm not in a hurry to buy one, could be patient and spend the winter looking for something i really want. Only problem is the patience bit. Not my strong point. Might see you at maxey and come and be nosey at your van. Thanks for the advice about the 7k van. i really don't want to go above 5k tops anyway.
You should be able to get a really nice van for £5k. Logic says vans should be cheaper in the winter!
I had thought the same thing. Winter should be cheaper. I just hope you can still find them for sale. If i had one now, i wouldn't be selling for any price. Hope all of you lucky people who already have a commer get some good weather to enjoy them in this year, and hopefully i'll have one of my own to meet up with you in by the spring.
I would think they will pop up in winter - especially as people will have to continually tighten their belts. We got ours in October last year. I know its been silly season of late with the price of campers, but i would think £7k is way to much. Obviously as you say, the price is pretty irrelevant if you are willing to pay though.
But for £5k you should be able to get one of the best - if someones willing to sell it!
