Morning all - starting some bits of work already on the van ready for a Summer in France, fitting a front bunk now the baby isn't a baby anymore, SU conversion, brake servo etc. etc.
...was wondering if anyone knew off the top of their heads whether the sump can be removed on an alloy head engine while it's still in the van or is it an engine out time?
I guess being an alloy head makes no difference but though I better mention it
You will need plenty of rags or long arms lol ....you need to disconnect the steering arms...also where the engine meets the gearbox, disconnect the clutch fluid line (red) and remove the 4 bolts that hold the splash guard and remove it (the plate that stops all the wet and muck getting into the clutch) ....when you undo all the sump bolts, this will allow a little more movement to lower the sump with a slight rearwards motion to avoid it getting caught on the oil pump ...whilst you have the sump off, give the oil pump filter a clean with a soft wire brush ...and clean the sump out with petrol or similar to remove all the sticky crud and metal fragments that will have settled ....
Whilst your there If you remove the bearing shell at either end ..clean the old sealant from the mating faces and apply a little new sealant then refit the shells ...I'll post a pic shortly to show you.......or the oil tends to seep through here
