This weekend has seen me return to doing some work on my van.
I wanted to get the axle case up in place and made up this weekend but it just didn't happen. Mainly because I ran out of the rapping I was using for my leaf springs. As soon as I get more rap then it's all good to go back up in place.

As I had a bit of free time I decided to clean/change the overdrive filters. As I have had a few dealings with J type overdrives, I have mad a tool in order to get the filter out, it's just a cut down grinder key.

I think you can see that they were well overdue changing.

Year it is exhaust rap, the only stuff I had lying around. I don't know if rapping springs is something that is really done, I once had a Herald that had its rear spring rapped and it kept it like new. I thought this was a rather good idea, when I ran the idea past a few friends they had never seen it done before and told me not to bother. None the less I did it anyway, not sure if there is a proper product to buy for doing this? Doing it in exhaust rap is slightly wasteful lol

It,s not a bad idea as it keeps all the road grit out. My first Riley had leather boots fitted to them, i think they were available in the 50/60,s.
The thing that concerns me with exhaust wrap is it soaks up moisture like a sponge [xx(] might be worth coating them with something waterproof.

"You,re only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"

They are absolutely covered in grease but I understand what your saying, I will look into water proofing it from the outside as well :), It's a bit of an experiment to see how long it lasts and how well it works.

yeah, that be the stuff. I don't feel to bad now as it's near enough the same price as the exhaust/heat rap :)

I wanted to replace the little ball joints that are on the gear selectors. Anything to help the free play in the gearstick is always a good idea.
(when I was running the van I remember it was always very hard to find reverse, one time it took 14 attempts and ending up an inch from a wall. I had to give up and turn the engine off, put it in revers then start it. The problem was the alternator was getting in the way of the rod.)

So I went down my local tractor / engineering suppliers.

bought these and a bit of threaded bar, and made this

The ball joints are from ride on mowers, all in it cost me £29 a little on the expensive side but as long as it lasts.

1 and a half tubs of filler went in the side of my van yesterday night and I have been rubbing it out all day today.
Can't believe it took so much filler to hide my slightly dodge Side panel.
