Stumped!

We had a similar issue with the Riley and it turned out to be water getting in the cylinder from a crack [xx(] That's why i asked about moisture :)

Sorry pops.Sometimes though its easier and a lot cheaper to just swap the lump over for a good one, if the current engine has a cracked cylinder its scrap anyway ;)

The heads off and as I suspected nothing to see! The gasket was perfect, the pistons all have the same amount of movement which is within tolerance, no signs of any cracks on the head, block or liners the only thing wrong is a massive build up of carbon on the valves but it`s the same on all cylinders not just the non firing one. I have leak checked the valve seats and they are all ok so I shall replace the gasket decoke the valves and put it all back together...to probably find it still runs on 3 cylinders :(

Hmm, what can be left? sounds like must be some sort of timing issue but in the mean time...

I can only offer what I'd do next right or wrongly -

Play in the distributor causing weak spark?
EasyStart to see if fires on all 4 (weak Spark or mixture messed up on that cylinder i.e. air leak as mentioned)
Colortune - good piece of kit - is it firing on occasion in there? - is the plug sparking when in the cylinder, not sure why this would happen as should earth ok.

The spark is now strong enough to light up Blackpool in October! Timing is bang on, spark plug not earthing is something that crossed my mind as I had a CF with a similar problem last year and it was the plug not earthing but a new one sorted that and it hasn`t with this. Nothing left to do but decoke it clean all the faces and put it back together.

Complete shot in the dark, but I don't suppose it could be some sort of blockage or obstruction in the inlet or exhaust manifold to that cylinder. Never heard of that happening, but as kids we used to have great results by sticking a spud up someone's exhaust pipe!

Good call....but that`s not an issue here. I did once have a Metro in for repair because it would not go above 30mph and that turned out to be a collapsed exhaust baffle but it still ran on all cylinders.
I have decoked and cleaned everything ready for reassembly when the gasket set arrives.

Have a really close look at the head with a strong magnifier ;)

My Type 2 VW had similar issues and the cause was some kind of internal exhaust baffle causing restriction. A run on the dual carriage way, possibly way above the legal speed limit resulted in a loud bang and an exhaust with a hole blown through the side, and a much better running engine. Intrigued what's going on here. Worth using one of those in-line lights that fit between the plug and lead just to make sure there is a consistent spark when the engine is running with the plug in place. Even better, as already mentioned, if you have one use a Colourtune to see what's going on in there.
 
Work has come to a stop for the time being as I am waiting on a head set to be delivered, should be here on Tuesday in the meantime I shall clean and repaint all the removed components.

Ok, the gaskets arrived today so it was back on with the head and I now have a CA running on 4 cylinders:D......but I do not know what I have done to fix the problem? I can only think that as the combustion chambers were so coked up the carbon was stopping number one cylinder firing and the other three cylinders would have followed suit in a short space of time.
Still problem solved so its onwards and upwards :D
