Hi Dominic and welcome along to our friendly place:)
Just to clear things up yes - you are mad. Who else would take on a 50+ year old camper that virtually no one under the age of 50 has ever heard of, spend time and money on them just to spend as long as possible camped in damp fields in the raino_O. All of us actually so you're in the company of equally afflicted people who just can't help themselves - some of us are even worse and have more than one van. Definitely destined for the madhouse ;)
Now you diagnosis is official you need to enter therapy, this is achieved by a detailed explanation of your van, how you came to get it, your plans and lots and lots of pics.
You can start the session by saying Hi I'm Dominic and I own a Commer. Over to you:)

Hey all , I'm Dominic & I recently become the proud care taker of Betsy a 1973 Commer autosleeper deluxe. I noticed the advert over 2 years ago though and although I was already rebuilding a 90's Renault trafic autosleeper I just had to message the owner just to say wow I love it , what is it and wow again, a very long story short me & Kevin was speaking often and he said he would like Betsy to go to someone who really likes her for what she is and someone who will get her back on the road again so he saved her for me, I honestly can't thank the man enough and his wife for supporting him while waiting for me to sort things out my end, but she's her now and I absolutely love her , honestly I can't stop smiling , I'll upload lots of pictures soon, she is in a bad way but I'm 100% dedicated to getting back on the road , may not be a pristine restoration but she will be back on the road at some point. I've not had her running , she has ventilation holes all over her , but baby steps I'm going to focus on a small bit at a time as if I strip the lot it may seem overwhelming plus ignorance is bliss sometimes.

What a great story and hats off to Kevin and his wife for being so patient. Good luck and keep us up to date on progress - I'm currently in the process of what started as a refresh on Harvey, our Auto-Sleeper, but it's fast becoming a major project (again)

Yeah I can imagine soon as you start digging you find more and more . I've got a welder now so can start cleaning up, cutting out and welding in soon

We're all normal here. It's everyone else on the planet that are insane. (Especially those strange people who insist on contracting Virus Wagen disease) :D BUT.... pictures, pictures, we must have pictures. Oh well, time for my breakfast. Now, where did I put my vodka and valium?

Welcome to the mad House! As Panky has said, we are all nutters in our own way on here. Some have more than one van, some of us have vans that are supercar killers on the drag strip but we are a friendly and welcoming bunch.

Thanks for the welcome all. Well it seems the rain has stopped so I can take the cover off Betsy & take lots of pics ( sorry for the delay but plenty of big holes) she is in a very bad way & I'm worried some might say she's past it but I still smile from ear to ear every time I see her , I'm going into this project a little blind on purpose as don't want to be put off, I'll focus on a bit at a time and what ever pops up along the way I'll deal with it somehow, I really really like the van and I'm hoping with a lot tlc and a little guidance from fellow nutters I'll be dandy.

Nothing is beyond saving as a few on here have proved. If you need any panels Martin Maltas makes a great selection of the usual sections that rot out, I'm in the process of fitting his cab door bottom repairs and his inner and out steps. I might even go for his peak replacement sections as the repair I did years ago is looking crusty,
Here's a wee tasty of what I'm up to this time around

Wow the work going on around here is amazing and encouraging, thanks for the panel tip, I will be needing both left and right front valance but going to focus on repairing the roof and around the windows as it's invisible at the moment.

Welcome Dominic and congratulations on catching Commer fever. Unlike other illnesses, there is no known cure! One major difference between the Commer and the Renault Trafic is that you can still get headlights for a Commer! I look forward to seeing your progress.

Yeah honestly it's strange, I don't get how everyone else doesn't get it I mean they are awsome. As for the headlights that's good news as I have a rusty reflector and probably light fitting in one of mine but that's nearer the bottom of my list of things to do, it's quite a small list though, sort rust, get her running and fix headlight, simple ; ) ; )
