Hi All just a quick hello again, not been on here for a bit, Commer still going well. Mine was the blue one parked next to glady,s in wales 2011. Just passed its mot, just wanted trackrod end rubbers and front brake balance doing. Hopefully going to start restoring body soon. Fitted some nice front seats out of a suberu so nice and comfy now. Not used it much this year due to weather and finances, but still on the road. Need a set of front spring if anyone has a spare pair they want to sell me, i lowered mine but dont like it so want to put it back to std height again. See you all soon i hope. Paul

Its not the ride so much as the problems i have over rough roads and sleeping policemen, saying that it does handle a lot better. i dropped it a coil and a half and put 185x50/15 tyres on, it dropped it 5", may be a bit too much. i haven't done my rebound stops yet so on rough ground the spring tend to rattle.
Went out for a run last night and i think i have a problem with the over drive, symtums are, on over run with od off engine seems to disengage from drive as if you are putting clutch down, with over drive engaged it behaves normaly that why im thinking its got something to do with od, any ideas anyone ??????. it started after about 15miles and engine was up to running temp.
What type of overdrive is it? D or J?
Can you explain more clearly when this occurs, as I am a little unclear as to what is happening. I assume that when you are driving you are experiencing something like clutch slipping? How do you tell that drive is being lost as on the overrun no power is being applied from the engine?
Replacement parts are available, but it depends if you are confident enough to dismantle the overdrive unit to repair it!

Hi Thowman, its a J type overdrive, i will try to explain what happened...driving along as normal in 4th gear no OD engaged, came to a bit of a decline in the road so took my foot off the acererator expecting the engine to slow me down a bit but it sounded like the gearbox had jump out of gear and was coasting but when i checked it was still in 4th, when i changed to third and clutch up, it jurked and then coasted again, when i got to the bottom of hill had to stop for junction, put into first and nothing happened then engine took up drive and went ok. tried it with OD on and didnt do it. On way back on duel carrage way bout 50mph put in overdrive and got a judder and the OD kicked in. Hope this helps.
I have to say it does sound like the friction material that keeps the direct drive connected is worn. Basically, inside the overdrive, there is a drive plate that has two lots of conical friction material on it. On one side it is for keeping the overdrive in direct drive, and the other is for connecting the overdrive sun wheels. If one or the other side is worn, problems can occur.
As a first thing to do I would make sure that the gearbox level is correct. If it isn't, make sure it's filled and then take for another test drive. If it is full already, then you might need to get the overdrive looked at. You can get a reconditioned replacement from overdrive services of Sheffield at a price, or try to repair it yourself.
My money is on the cone clutch. I just bought an overdrive which was having the opposite problem of not disengaging, and that is own to a poor clutch cone.

Thanks Andy, it does have an oil leak from the rear end oil seal and i haven't checked the oil since i changed it when i first got the van about 18mths ago (4000 miles). I will check the level and see if that makes a differance. Thanks for your advise. There is a good transmision place here in peterborough that may be able to have a look at it if i take it out, are the bits readly available for them?.

I was reading thought the d type troubleshooting guide the other day, and for "clutch slips in direct drive position when reversing or using engine as a brake" the problems can be
1. Worn or glazed clutch linings
2. Oil way in valve rod blocked (part of system that engages the overdrive and disengages it.
3. Insufficient return spring pressure on clutch (being the clutch inside the overdrive).
So, if the problem reappears, it is likely to be one of the above.

Thanks Andy, i will keep this list in mind. I didnt check the oil or top up yet, i will have a look at weekend. I have a couple of days of work next week so if its a nice weekend i might perswade the wife to go away in it to 'test' to see if its ok on a journey, if you get my meaning.
