Steering box

Just wondering what is an acceptable amount of play in the steering wheel?

Is there any way of taking up some of this play?

Mine seems to be a bit on the excessive side. I do have the workshop manual if there is a specific reference to anything...

Thanks.

There are so many components that wear on the Commer steering it's sometimes hard to tell where it's at. There is only one adjustment on the steering box and that is the tapered peg, but it is only for play in the worm gear at the centre steering position. There is a screw and lock nut under the rubber boot at the base of the steering column for adjustment. The front wheels should be off the ground so you can feel when the peg starts to touch the worm as you screw it in while turning the steering wheel from side to side, then back the peg off again so no drag is felt.
Best to check everything else first - track rod ends, king pins, relay levers etc.

Is that the "rocker shaft end float" that is referred to in the manual?

Adjusting screw and locknut. On page J.4

Yup that's the one. I've tried adjusting it a couple of times but always found it to be OK, the play was elsewhere.

Should have asked.... Is the screw something I can locate easily from underneath with the van up on axle stands?
