Steering adjustment

Has anyone adjusted the steering box on the vans - I have about an inch of play, the multiple connecting rods all look fine so I'm suspecting the box. Would adjusting the screw take out possible slack as the manual doesn't really state it's for this purpose also what oil should go in there if it's needed?

The screw on the steering box is only for adjusting the end float on the rocker shaft. With front wheels off the ground, and the steering central, wind the screw in. By turning the steering wheel from side to side you will feel the steering tighten as you wind the screw in, back the screw off until you don't feel any resistance at the steering wheel. Unless the adjustment is way off (probably worn steering box) you won't feel that much difference, The play is more likely to be in the relay lever bushes, ball joints or king pins.
 
The worm inside the box engages with the rocker shaft by a pin. As you turn the steering wheel the worm (big thread) moves the rocker shaft back and forth to give the movement to transfer to the steering components. The rocker shaft needs a bit of clearance between it and the steering box housing so as not to be too tight and not too sloppy.
The clearance is initially set with shims but you can adjust the screw a little to allow for wear.
