Starting issue

Hey Guys,

Lovely classic car event on here today so uncovered the Bus ready to take my passengers on a jount and she will not start.

The motor cranks very slowly and flatten a fully charged 600 cca battery in around 1 minute. I am thinking starter shorting but any clues would be much appreciated.

I have checked earth straps.
Anyone had this problem,?

Had the same problem with my bus. Ran a set of jump-lead straight to the starter. Once it had started started off its own battery ok. Spray some petrol down the carb.:):):):)
 
Certainly sounds like a duff battery so try another first, but may need the started commutator cleaning up and new brushes.

Battery is good i have tested it with hydrometer and swapped it for battery from my daily with same results and both battery's start my daily fine , so will have a closer look at the starter when i get time.
I will let you know what the issue is when i find it.

I had a similar problem a few years ago, and it turned out to be a broken connection between the field coils inside the starter motor.
Another similar failure (and probably more likely) is the short interconnect strap between the solenoid and the motor due to vibration.
Neither of these are very likely, but I've had both, so they do happen!
Both are repairable, ie new starter not required.
 
I Have found that the new starters ,which are sold new here in Australia and come from china .After a short while loose their power . My auto electrician tells me it is the quality of their copper wire in the units.You can tell these units by the fact that they do not have the clamp over the main body through which you can see the brushes

That sounds about right and I suspected something like that was going on. I only fitted that starter new a few years back when we were touring. It really hasn't done a lot of work. I think it was made in India and i suspected failed winding's:mad:

I have another second hand Lucas in my spares that i will put a rebuild kit in and fit when i get a chance.:)
