Hello,


Since getting the second Commer I have noticed that it isn't that the battery is knackered on charlie, it's the starter not 100%. It's very slow to crank and unless I jump him he's a little tricky to get going.

I notice that you can get brush kits - not found complete starters on ebay... what's my best course of action here?

I did the brushes on Bonnie, made a big difference. You will need a good soldering iron for the job as two of the brushes are attached to the windings. I cut these wires back to about 1/2" long and soldered the new brushes to them.

I had a lazy starter on the Beddie with worn brushes but new ones made no difference at all:(
Presumed a fault in the windings and I managed to find a good replacement starter off a Beddie breaker.

The simpler the betterer...
 
Interesting.

I guess if I could compare resistance on the coils of both starters to see if there are shorts in the one...

I had a slow starter recently. I took it to a repair man who charged me £40 to fit new brushes, but it was still the same. The field coil wiring had broken where it's welded end to end. I cleaned it up, wrapped it in a piece of copper cut from some pipe, then soldered it with a big soldering iron. Job done.
