My 1975 Commer starter is sluggish. Should I get another one?
I dismantled it last year and found it was not rotating freely, so I fixed it somehow so it spun round without friction and it then started the van. But only with some help from a jump start. The battery was fairly new and suitable for a Bedford van.
A 2.5 diesel Land Rover was connected to the jump leads.
Today I spent several hours trying to start my van after leaving it standing for a year. I got the carb in bits in front of me. Can't see anything wrong. I put new fuel in the empty tank and before that fed new fuel in from a 5 gallon fuel can. I had jump leads to the Land Rover again.
The starter was making really hard work of turning the engine. It always has. In the short time it was on the road I nearly always used the starting handle. With your Commer, does the starter whiz the motor round or does the engine 'grrrrrrrwwwhhhumpff' at intervals of about a second as the starter heaves the flywheel into every compression stroke?
