I took the starter off today and dismantled it[B)], with the aid of my multi meter i detected a direct short on the positive pole due to worn insulators. This is why it was getting so hot and not cranking.[^]
I cut a small piece of spare plastic fuel line to insulate the positive connector thread and also cut up an old inner tube to insulate the internal conductor bars, one of which was cracked so i soldered that up and checked the brushes/bushes while there.
A few drops of oil and its alive once more. Cranking better than ever
Pretty amasing as this starter has its date on it 08/1970 so its probably still the original one.
How long my repair will last is another problem. But plenty of time to keep my eye out for a replacement now.
