Starter, 9 or ten tooth?

With my ageing starter becoming less reliable we stopped into an Auto electrician and were supplied with a nine tooth starter replacement.My old starter had ten teeth and i voiced my concern to the car sparky bloke and he assured me there would be no problems and it will be fine.[8)]

I am a little concerned, both pinions appear the same size, so wouldn't the teeth gap be bigger on the nine tooth?
Will this wear the ring gear or do some other damage?[V]
Anyway i fitted it and although it works ok most of the time, sometimes it doesn't engage.

Anyone been there?[8D]

Couldn't you swap the pinions over?

We've had this before on the Colonel, it will work with either but i think 9 tooth is correct

My old pinion looked really worn so i didn't want to at the time of fitting the new one. Unfortunatley its now in a bin 200miles away:I
Never mind i just wanted to check that no one had experienced damage using a nine tooth.
