Start button won’t start

I have had the speedo out to get it recalibrated for a new type D overdrive and taken out the instrument panel. I have cleaned it all up and changed the ammeter (and removed the wiring) for a temp gauge. Putting all back together I have broken a terminal on the start button this I have re-soldered and reconnected all wiring. I can get everything to work (fan/wipers/overdrive) except the start button won’t trip the solenoid to engage the starter.

I have checked all the wiring. I have power from the solenoid via the red/white wire. I also have a working switched supply (white wire).

The ignition warning light comes on with the key. It also comes one when pressing the start button without the ignition on. Not sure of that is normal.

I have traced the ignition warning lamp wiring to the alternator. That is all correct.

So I seem to have a working Start button, and a working ignition switch. The only thing I can think is wrong is the solenoid. But that is a newish item fitted in 2020.

Any ideas anyone? I must have done something wrong but I can’t figure it out.

Disconnect the start button and touch the wires together. If it cranks then you know 100% that the button is knackered. Don't just assume anything with these electrics..

When you took the ammeter out did you join the two thick wires together?

I took the cables out (about 12 feet) and reconnected them direct to the solenoid. But as I have a direct cable from alternator (Lucas A127 replacement) to the battery they are a duplicate circuit in any case.

Will it turn over if you short across the solenoid contacts?

I’ll have to check, it’s not the easiest spot on the van to get to. But I think I may have put the red & white wire back on the wrong spade on the underside of the solenoid. I took it off to remove the old ammeter wiring. Which may explain why the ignition warning lamp illuminates when the starter button is pressed with the ignition off.

I did check the Start button worked. I have ordered a new one though. I don’t trust my solder and flue repair. And it is a really tough spot to get at once the dash is back in.

Conclusion was red/white start button wire was on the wrong terminal of the solenoid. Sod of a place to get at. Started first time once on the right one. Also have fitted new Jaguar type start button from Holdens. I don’t think it will go quicker but may be a millisecond quicker to start…Good for the Le Mans style starts planned for the upcoming race season!
