Speedo not working - any advice ?

Yet another glorious weekend away in our Commer this weekend, with some local 'wild camping' up at the Norfolk coast [8D]

Unfortunately our speedo stopped working on our way out, so it's all been guesswork ever since. I've checked the cable connections at the speedo and gearbox and these seem fine.

I'm at a loss what to do next, other than try a new cable - which isn't really feasible as we're off to Yorkshire on Thursday morning which doesn't leave us time to get one delivered and fitted.

Our speedo struggles up to around 20mph without about much 'flickering' and then stays there regardless of the road speed. It had been dropping back to 0mph when stationary but last night it got stuck at 22mph.

My mum has a sat-nav which would've acted as a temporary speedo but she's away at the moment :(

Any suggestions welcome, thanks.

(maybe I should run a sweepstake for how many tickets I pick up on our round trip ;))

Thanks Chris, we'd already planned at stop off at Martin's to discuss restoring our van this autumn/winter (before our rust really takes hold).

firstly disconnect the drive cable and try it, it should turn ok in your fingers when driven. if not its knackered. if the cable is ok then the clock is faulty :)

Thanks Tim, checked last night and the cable getting a strong drive from the gearbox.

Dashboard already out awaiting NOS speedo clock tonight - the first result in my 'if you see one cheap then buy it, just in case' spares philosophy' ;)

I've now cleaned and re-greased both ends of the speedo cable as per the workshop manual, any tips/precautions I should be aware of when fitting a new clock - would a quick squirt of WD40 do any harm ?

be a bit careful at the clock end as they don,t like grease/oil inside them ;)

Thanks folks, our NOS speedo clock now fitted last night and all's working well. Our van has now travelled a total of 24 miles - I've nevered owned a vehicle with such low mileage ;)

Setting out from Norfolk for our big trip to Yorkshire tomorrow morning [8D]
